Untitled [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 3 April 1852

We have recently received several letters from persons in the northern part of the State, making inquiries in regard to the agricultural advantages of Southern California and the practicability of obtaining land suitable for cultivation at a fair rate. ¶ Want of time to reply individually to these communications prevents us from doing so ; we therefore take occasion to say a few words to our friends through this medium. It would be better, however, for persons desirous of settling here, to come and observe for themselves, for in no other way can a correct idea on the subject be formed. ¶ Angeles county contains probably upwards of a million of acres of arable land, suitable for raising all kinds of grain. Or this, the Santa Ana, San Gabriel, and numerous smaller streams intersect about one half, rendering it suitable for raising every kind of vegebles, &c.; and the yield and size of last year's crop proves its peculiar adaptation for that purpose. ¶ As a stock raising lo...

Los Angeles County Indians. [LETTER NO. VIII.] Medicine unil Diseases. ¶ Their medical men were esteemed as wizards and seers, and called *A-hub-su-voi-rot*. They not only cured descuses, but created them ; they poisoned people with herbs and ceremonies, made it rain when required, consulted the good spirit and received answers, changed themselves into the form of divers animals, and foretold coming events. All of this was firmly believed by the people, and in consequence their seers were held in dread and deep reverence. ¶ In regard to the diseases then prevalent, in ' as lUUuu as srputiis was unknown, Brandy and !
