Redifer explained staff objections to Prop 19 language prohibiting discrimination against marijuana users in several areas, not limited to but including healthcare, education, employment, retirement and insurance.“ They will become like a protected category,” said Redifer. ber, marijuana will still be illegal under federal law. As a result, the City will face“ a direct contradiction with the federal and State law” explained Redifer, leaving Palmdale“ caught in the middle” on whether to enforce California law or submit to conflicting federal prohibition laws. Possible negative health effects were cited as another reason to continue to support prohibition, along with marijuana being considered as a“ gateway drug,” said Redifer.“ Public safety” was mentioned next by Redifer, who said the inability of government to prevent a person from driving after consuming marijuana was not addressed by Prop 19, and this oversight was certain to become a serious problem without law enforcement havin...

24 SEPTEMBER 1869: This day will become known as Black Friday . Despite President Grant’s refusal to cooperate with stock manipulators Jay Gould and James Fisk Jr. , the two maliciously spread word that Grant will prevent the sale of government gold. Grant himself has been led to believe the sale would harm farmers and small businessmen. Wining and dining Grant, Gould and Fisk reinforce him in this idea. The price of gold rises to paniccausing heights as the gold necessary for day-to-day business operations goes out of the reach of small merchants. Slow-thinking Grant finally realizes the disastrous nature of the conspiracy and belatedly orders the release of $ 4,000,000 in gold. This offsets a cornering of the market, and bullion plunges from 162 to 135. Small and large investors are caught in the aftermath of their ruinous adventure, and a tarnished Grant emerges as a crony of crooks. 18 SEPTEMBER 1873: The failure of the respectable brokerage firm of Jay Cooke and Company precipi...

mayor. Parking spaces at the county level are governed by Los Angeles County Code, Title 22, Planning and Zoning, Chapter 22.52 GENERAL REGULATIONS, 22.52.1060, Specifications for development or parking facilities. This code states, “Parking spaces shall be designed and striped as shown in Appendix 3 of this Title 22.” Edwards said in late July a fellow employee shared with her the article published in The Political Observer exposing the situation at the courthouse. After reading the article, Edwards said she began investigating our claims regarding the size of the parking spaces. Monique Edwards is a Management Analyst II ( supervisor) in the Finance Department at Lancaster City Hall, and it is she who called for her Parking Enforcement officers to temporarily suspend issuing citations at Antonovich Courthouse and COSTCO for not parking within the confines of a single space. Issuing Citations Suspended Appendix 3, Title 22 was not available on-line and a call was placed to Los Ange...

The following figures are from City of Lancaster’s budget documents as made available to the public at their website: www. cityoflancasterca. org. Figures for FY 2004/ 05 through FY 2008/ 09 are reported as“ actual.” Soon after this conversation, the infamous Lexus was observed driving into the government employee parking lot, and parking occupying two spaces - as pictured on the front page of our August newspaper. The Political Observer asked the driver the same questions as the previous scofflaw but this government employee replied to our inquiries with“ no com- ment.” When asked if she was aware the practice was against parking code, frowned upon by Parking Enforcement, and that the general public is often ticketed for the same thing, the gubmnt’ employee haughtily replied,“ They don’t patrol our parking lot. It’s only against the law for you.” When asked for her name, the scofflaw laughed aloud, smiled, declined to provide her name, and then began walking to the Courthouse. The ...

From the days of John Peter Zenger, Freedom of The Press has been a perilous topic. A Free Press is essential to a democratic society and must be preserved. And yet, an irresponsible Press has too often driven American policy. William Randolph Hearst is credited, or discredited if you will, with enflaming the American public to such a fever pitch that they demanded a war with Spain. The Ministry of Magic uses the press to hide the truth to Rowling knows better. Collusion between the Ministry of Magic, the wizard’s government, and The Daily Prophet , becomes obvious in volume five, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix , as the paper launches a highly successful smear campaign against Harry and his mentor, Albus Dumbeldore. Dumbledore is portrayed as a senile old man while Harry is dismissed as a“ nutter.” The government refuses to believe the agonizing truth that the evil Lord Voldemort has returned.” You-Know-Who” or“ He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named,” is everyone’s worst nightmare. The Libertarian social psychologist Sharon Presley studied for her PhD under Milgram at the City University of New York in the ’ 70s; she says, politically, Milgram was not a Libertarian, but“ a Liberal Democrat who was in favor of Civil Liberties.” nized societies would immediately perceive and act on the opportunities that weakness creates. This article is transcribed from the Libertarian Tradition podcast episode“ The Milgram Experiment” and has been reprinted from CampaignForLiberty. com. Harry Potter & Contemporary American Society Fear Muslims, fear African-Americans, fear gays, fear immigrants. They are all out to get you. It has become a constant drum beat which, most unfortunately, resonates with too many Americans who refuse to question the validity of the nonsense they are being fed. Like the wizarding world, we find it easier not to think. In the end, good triumphs over evil in the Harry Potter series. One can only hope that reality ends as nicely as a worthy...

For example, for cookie and cracker makers the standard is 750 workers, and firms engaged in manufacturing breakfast cereal or specialty canning can employ up to 1,000 workers and still qualify. The 500-employee standard used by SBA’s Office of Advocacy isn’t the only official definition of“ small.” For purposes of qualifying for federal programs, the legal standard varies by industry. So when a politician speaks of“ small businesses,” it’s wise to ask: What exactly is “small”? The job stats for smaller small businesses wasn’t that uplifting, either. In a recent statement, Obama cited a Bureau of Labor Statistics ( BLS) report that had been released the day before. BLS said that in the fourth quarter of 2009, 61.8 percent of all net job losses occurred in businesses with fewer than 50 em- ployees. Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell said on“ Meet the Press” that in the last quarter of 2009,“ 84 percent of the jobs that were lost were lost in small business.” That figure is base...

So where does the government get all this money even as its most obvious stream of revenue dries up? How can it keep spending seemingly indefinitely? It works well for large, well-connected military industrial corporations, who can always count on perpetual war and conflict to keep them in business. It also works for those on the government’s payroll, which is increasing as the tax base is decreasing. But current economic policy does“ work” for some people. For example, it has worked out very well for certain bankers and large corporations, who took on too much risk and got themselves in hot water, and were declared “too big to fail” which is really a euphemism for“ friends in high places.” What solutions are put forth? More government spending - even as each citizen’s portion of the public debt is over $ 43,000 and expected to increase by $ 250,000 over the next 40 years. No, this economy is not working for these people. As more Americans are added to the unemployment rolls, the ta...
