“I can’t think of anyone who doesn’t like Bob Marley,” she said.“ I’ve been listening since I was in junior high. My mom likes him too.” Then there’s the blue denim shirt he wore during many performances, handwritten set lists and a timeline. Colored in green, yellow and red, it highlights the milestones during and after his life, including the 2001 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award he was given posthumously. On the show’s opening day, 19-year-old Christina Chavez looked up at the Marley timeline. Although he died more than a decade before she was born, she noted how he seems to have an almost universal appeal. recording sessions. A particularly magnetic shot shows a serious Marley with a cloud of smoke, presumably from marijuana, which was central to his Rastafarian beliefs, ris- ing above him. As Marley’s music played in the background, anthems like“ Redemption Song” and“ Could You Be Loved,” Ziggy helped open the show that includes more than 90 items. The exhibit, which runs thro...

Krunk Fu Battle Battle runs through June 26 at the David Henry Hwang Theater at the Union Center for the Arts, 120 Judge John Aiso St., ( 213) 625-7000 or eastwestplayers. org. Kim on Broadway in Miss Saigon . The standout is Lorenzo, whose easygoing and irreverent manner is as amusing as his dancing is eye-popping. His rap style is easy to understand, which should ease the older audience members into the genre. Humor is a major plus for Krunk Fu , and a re-creation of Madonna’s video for“ Vogue” ( something the TV show“ Glee” also employed) is fall-on-the-floor funny. Theater that is accessible and attractive to teens, while presenting positive messages without talking down to them, is rare. Krunk Fu Battle Battle may feel foreign to some of the usual EWP crowd, but the company deserves kudos for its efforts. for The Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles, please visit: You can help the Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles win $ 500,000 by simply “liking” the Online Community Giving progra...

May 27-28, 7: 10; May 29, 1: 10 p. m.: Almost 50 games into the 2011 baseball season, most of the attention on the Dodgers has been off the field. And we’re not talking about Andre Ethier serving lunch at a Skid Row soup kitchen ( let alone his recent 30-game hitting streak). Instead, there’s been the nasty post-McCourt divorce drama, the beefed-up police presence following the opening night beating of a Giants fan, and Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig wresting control of the team from Frank McCourt. It’s not really surprising, considering that the team is four games under .500 ( as Los Angeles Dodgers Dodger Stadium, 1000 Elysian Park Ave., ( 213) 224-1400 or dodgers. mlb. com. — Ryan Vaillancourt May 23, 2011 28 Downtown News On and Off the Field With the Stumbling, Soft-Hitting Dodgers We Got Games of press time) and is virtually incapable of producing any consistent offense. Cetina’s Chichen Itza is small, but produces some citrus-rich spicy gems. Cetina grew up in the Yucatan and helped in his mother’s restaurant. He opened his own place in 2001 and serves dishes like panuchos, a crispy corn tortilla stuffed with black beans and topped with lettuce, shredded charbroiled turkey, pickled red onion, cucumbers, tomatoes and avocado. Angelenos are continuing to enjoy the many wondrous things the city offers, just without those flying purple and gold car flags. Downtown restaurants are still pulling in diners, though they’ll miss the added revenue of customers attending up to 10 more home games ( the maximum if the series against Dallas had gone to seven games and if the Lakers had home court advantage in the next two rounds). Area businesses are forced to make do with their regular customers, leisure travelers and the massive crowds coming next week to the E3 video game convention. T he NBA Finals begin this week, and for the first time since 2007, they are taking place without the Los Angeles Lakers. While this sparked a lot of consternation a couple weeks ago, when they were decimated by the Dallas Mavericks, with a little perspective we can all see that everything is just fine. For most people, life is no worse. The city hasn’t plunged into the Pacific. The team even managed to find a new coach. Surviving The...

Sometimes, BID renewals and expansions are contentious. In the Fashion District in 2008, a group of dissatisfied property owners sought to kill the BID’s renewal effort. Instead, the district shrank temporarily, cutting services to areas where people were opposed to renewal. Rental Base : Although several artists currently use the building as studio space, Linder is not marketing the property to investors looking to rent it out ( indeed, King noted that the tenants are on month-to-month leases and the property can be delivered vacant). Instead, he sees it as a good opportunity for an owner/ occupier. The property’s zoning would ultimately allow for a live/ work use, though the buyer would have to secure approvals from the city, he said. Looking Up : One potential draw for the property is that its zoning would allow a new owner to build another floor, Linder said.“ That’s something that’s not available in many other places and is highly desirable for architects,” he said. Color Scheme : Those with quirky taste might dig the exterior of the building — it’s painted a color that rests somewhere between eggplant and pink. Conservative aesthetes might not.
