The Turks have been laying it on to tlxe Russians lately, and we suppose the grand march to Con- stantinople will at least be delayed a little longer. "While we think- Russia will eventually l>e the con- queror, we are satisfied that the Turks will occasionally strike some terrible heavy licks. A weakening of both these semi-civilized powers would be serviceable to the pros- perity of the civilized world. We learn that J. M. Smith l'or a loog timo deputy sheriff of Wil- liamson county, and marshal of Georgetown, has been condemned to the penitentiary for life for the killing of a man at Greenville, Hunt county. The only witness to the murder has been far away for several years, and Smith thought himself in no danger, but it appears that he turned up at the last term of that court and the conviction resulted. The way of the trans- gressor is h...

Fowler, who has lately been stop- ping at this place. We learn that the difficulty occurred at the card table. Fowler surrendered himself to the authorities. Hobby has been acquitted of the charges lately investigated at Aus- tin. Technicalities of the law and the influence of warm and influ- enza) friends have turned him looBe, whereas if he had been a ^>or devil with no money and no political confederates and cham- pions he would now be assigned to a cell in Huntsville. We hear that quite a number of prisoners in jail at Burnet made their escape one night last week. They were, however, not of the worst confined in the jail, as these were carefully kept in the cells. The jail breaking gentry and those v Who lately endeavored to bribe the sheriff are still safe and will be elosely...

3§k* PUBLISHED WEEKLY. AN VKMIUK PRATER. A correspondent of the Panola Watchman referring to the early days of Texas, recites a prayer made many years ago in Shelby- ville, Texas, at what was called a "Sixteen days meeting" by one Aven Shoemaker, who evidently was the proprietor of a corn mill. Hiá langnage was as follows : "Oh, that the ears of corn wonld grow like wagon hubs, and the grains like iron wedges, and nobody^s mill conld crack them but Aven Shoemaker's, Oh, God."
