Thursday Morning, Dec. 28,1855. The steamer Perseverance, having been detained 24 hours in the Mississippi by fog, did not arrive at Galveston until yesterday morning. She brings no later European accounts than those had here last Friday night, being from Liverpool to the 8th inst., from which it appears that provious there had been a fair demand in the Liverpool Cotton market and the sales amounted to 50,000 balos, of which 11,000 were to speculators and for export. Trices were un- changed, the quotation for Orleans Fair being still 6%d. The Money market was easior and Consols had advancod to 90}£d., while the bullion in the Bank had increased £87,000. VOL II.—NO. 12.J THE GALVESTON COMMERCIAL AND WEEKLY TIUCES CURRENT. [JAN. 3, 185G. The Lower Kio Grande and Coast Country. The interest which we all feel as citizens of Texas , in a knowledge of the Rio Grande, commends the j following to the attention of all our readers. The article is taken from Professor Bache's Coast survey, and is the report of W. E. Greenwell, assistant. The country between Brazos St. Lago and Rio Grande is mostly a level prairie of alluvial foil—a vast grazing plain, upon which thousands of cattle find subsistence the whole year round. Rising ab- ruptly on this plain are islands, or "montes," as Ihey are called, varying from fifteen to forty feet in height—curiou9 features in themselves, since they all differ, both in soil and vegetation, from the level below. Upon these grows, in all its per- fection, the mezquite intermixed with a species of ebony and Hgnumvitac, perhaps the best fuel in tbe world. The Rio Grande is a narrow, tortuous stream, with an avera...

We have had another week of cold weather, in- clining business men, like Legislators on extraor- dinary occasions, to sit with closed doors, rather than expose themselves to unpleasant influences from without, when they can be avoided. Never- theless, the past has been a week of more than usual physical activity upon our streets and wharves.— The receipts both of country produce and of mer- chandise from abroad have been heavy, and it has often been difficult to obtain drays and laborers to discharge and remove cargoes from vessels.
