! THURSDAY. JANUARY 12. 1978 THt BASTROP COUNTS I1MES, SMITHVILLE, TEXAS 78957 Seedlings Are A vailable SEC. II. PAGE 3 With Arbor Day coming up January 20th, those landowners interested in buying pine seedlings for planting should buy now. 1 he folks at Indian Mound Nursery are urging all those interested to check into the seedlings soon. The windbreak and tree shelter belt that the seed- lings provide are neces- sary to farmers as are the lumber and soil conserva- tion that the trees yield. Indian Mound Nursery has had an unexpected surplus of pine and hard- wood seedlings this sea- son. They are committed to planters to produce so many tree seedlings a year. Balancing the exact demand with the exact supply creates somewhat of a problem. If the sup- ply falls short of the de- mand, then they some- times buy from other tree nurseries. If the sup- ply is in excess however, the service hopefully finds additional buyers. This season the nursery has found just that prob- lem. To elimin...

JANUARY 19. 1978 Fleming Crisis To End ELGIN—"1 think crisis would be an accurate portrayal of what's come up," said Fred Nyc, Fleming Hospital Administrator in a tele- phone interview concerning the status of Fleming Hospital and the recent board meeting. "It's gotten down to the point where unless we get a doctor in pretty quick we're going to have to. . .well..." Nye's voice trailed off in obvious concern. "Since Dr. Morris had a heart attack the last week of October, the census has gone down and remained down." explained Nyc. According to Nyc, maintaining the census in the hospital is the biggest problem they face. Nyc did not have specific Figures from the board meeting in front of him but he estimated that the hos- pital lost a couple of thousand dollars in November 1977 due to a drop in ce...

THl KSD/O . JAM 19. THE BASTROP COUNTY TIMES, SM1THVILLE. TEXAS "W57 SEC. I, PAGE 7 FFA Show i A Judge's Eye View Beauty exists in the eve of the beholder. It takes a trained eye to see the beauty of steers, heifer, swine, and rabbits. A judge for a livestock show is similar to a judge for a beauty contest, Don Hudson, agriculture teacher at Elgin High School, said. A judge looks for fea- tures in a steer that ap- peal to the eye. He feels the animal to see how much fat it has and to determine the prettiness and quality of a cut, explained Hudson. Of course, it's one man's opinion and re- flects what he likes best, Hudson said. "A judge tries to de- termine the future size of a heifer from the width and curving of bones," said Hudson. "Heifers and steers are also judged for showmanship by their stance and the way they're shown." The purpose of the El- gin Livestock show was to give the people enter- ing a chance to practice for major shows, ex- plained Don Lundgren, a student at Elg...
