22 SPORTS Reata October 29 1982 Future Cowboys will be tough brand new sports kimo kelii Could this be the year of the "Cowboys"? No I don't mean the Dallas Cowboys especially since they're in stagnation due to the NFL players' strike. I mean the Hardin-Simmons University Cowboys. (Oops sorry Cowgirls included). Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach Jim Hatfield said "Every sport this year is very much improved and the talent level on each ball club is outstanding." Despite meeting hectic deadlines each week swallowing unneccessary criticism from students and driving to Stamford where we print the Brand at 10 a.m. when I have an 11:00 class being Sports Editor is not all that bad. However when the school's soc- cer team appears in the Midwest Regional top ten rankings and the women's volleyball team's hopes of participating in the NAIA playoffs look alive being Sports Editor is great! That's not to mention the men's and women's tennis teams which won their Invitational last we...

HSU STUDENTS CAN THANK BILL CLEMENTS! Governor Clements worked hard as SMU Board Chairman to get the Texas Tuition Equalization Grant (TEG) program adopted by the Texas Legislature in 1971. Since 1971 the TEG program has provided state tuition grants to qualified students at all Texas private colleges. Governor Clements has led this effort in our behalf and has strongly sup- ported private church-related education by his actions and deeds. He deserves our appre- ciation and vote on November 2 ! Pol. adv. paid by Taylor County Governor Clements Committee James Parker Treas. 4209 Buffalo Gap Rd. Abilene TX. 79606.

See picture story on pages 8-9. (Mary Winchester photo) Letter from the editor Life's details often consume too much energy especially during a hectic season of the year. This semester has provided tremendous opportunity for growth among Hardin- Simmons University students. Many have learned.to focus on what Is really important in life. Studies work and organizations are important to a certain degree. But things of eternai value matter much more. Becoming caught up in temporary activities should not be allowed to overshadow long term goals and relationships that give life meaning. Because ultimately only onething matters: relatedness to the One' whose birth is told In the Christmas story. It's the only dependable thing In life but It gives us more than we need to live. And that one vital th...

ROTC teaches discipline of military life By Judy Kincaid Several students on the campus of Hardin-Simmons are becoming acquainted with the rigors and disciplines of military life while many of their classmates still lie tucked in bed early each Tuesday and Thursday morning. Hardin-Simmons has the privilege of being the host institu- tion for the college Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps activities in this area. Abilene Christian University and McMurry College are also involved in the program. Howard Payne University par- ticipates through an ROTC exten- sion on their campus. While many students on campus enroll in numerous ROTC classes there are only a few who have obligated themselves to military service upon graduation. Accor- ding to Enrollment Officer Capt. Robert M. Lively some students hesitate to sign up for military science classes because they think they will obligate themselves to military service. Any student can enroll in up to four military science courses (two year...

NEWS Employers hire workers by elimination process Editor's note: This Is the final arti- cle In a three-part series on career planning. Marian Brown Is a staff writer and Abilene realtor. By Marian Brown How well you sell yourself dur- ing a job Interview will determine whether you get the Job or whether it will go to another applicant. Why should a company hire you instead of others that will apply for the same Job? Try to Imagine yourself sitting on the other side of the desk. Would you hire yourself if you were the boss? What would you look for If you wore doing the hiring? Actually employers hire by pro- cess of elimination. They eliminate applicants until they arrive at one person and that Is the one they hire. Applicants are not chosen for a number of reasons. Some of the most common are these: A bad first Impression in- cluding a poor appearance or grooming. A "sensational" ap- pearance may be as detrimental as a sloppy one. Being unprepared. Every employer will want a work ...

Christmas celebrates the gift of life Walking through the mall a few days ago I was awakened to the fact that Christmas Is quickly coming upon me. As I thought of Christmas I remembered I needed to make a list of namesNof those for whom I need to buy presents. I really dislike having to sit down to try to decide what to get everyone for Christmas. It seems like everybody has everything. Then to top that off I have to find some way of insuring my budget fits what I decide to buy (or vice-versa). As I strolled through the mall I noticed all the Christmas decorations In the stores. On- ly at this time of year can such a competitive spirit be seen among the merchants. All of them try to out-perform each other. All In all I really enjoy seeing the bright and shiny ob- jects that dominate this joyous season. It's really neat to be able to walk through a store and see a Christmas tree about every five feet each one getting brighter and prettier than the last one. You know I afways wonder i...

Drunk drivers Laws crack down on highway killers By Cheryl Anthony Drunk drivers kill 25000 people every year yet current laws on the books in Texas retaliate with only a slap on the wrist. Habitual of- fenders return to the road to threaten more lives. But the state legislature may toughen up on punishment for the crime which causes more than half the highway fatalities in the nation. A package of laws that would impose stricter punishment on those convicted of driving while intoxicated (DWI) will be con- sidered in Texas this spring. The laws must be passed to guard the safety of passengers on Texas roads. One law proposed would raise the legal drinking age from 19 to 21. The minimum age went from 18 to 19 in 1981 resulting in "a drastic reduction in traffic deaths of 18-year-olds" said Abilene Depart- ment of Public Safety Officer Wendell Rehm. Those who oppose raising the age argue that young people will consume alcohol whether legally or illegally. Yet the Insurance Institute f...

Sports Plus Health for the holidays brand new sports ben ladner Hardln-Simmons Is known to be a model for healthy individuals. Between the required P.E. courses meal cards chapel credits and class attendance students are fashioned for superiority. During Thanksgiving students paused to examine these bless- ings and express their apprecia- tion. Recently World Hunger Awareness Week made many peo- ple a bit more conscious of the world they are in and our fortunate position therein. As we reflect upon these things during Christmas let us remember to con- tinue to "forge the future." A good place to start is by ex- pressing your love through con- cern for those you love. Share your knowledge of health and exercise with those you love and give a gift that keeps on giving and living. A few facts you could mention are that approximately 55 percent of all deaths in the United States are the result of cardiovascular diseases many of which are associated with obesity and inac- tivity.
