Cable Messages. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS.) European News. LONDON, FEB. 12. [Newspaper Article] — Cairns Post — 14 February 1884

Cable Messages. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS) European News.   LONDON, Feb. 12.   Sinkat has been captured by the Berber Arabs. The town was defended by 600 Egyptian troops, all of whom have been massacred. The followers     of the Mahdi are now in possession of the town. The Liberal party are urging an energetic policy upon the Ministry in connection with affairs in Egypt. Mr. Bradlaugh forced his way into the House of Commons and ad- ministered the oath himself. A motion was carried excluding him from the House of Commons and its precincts, Bradlaugh voted in the minority. A shoking massacre of native christians has been perpetrated in China. Over 200 have perished.

PORT DOUGLAS. February 7. [Newspaper Article] — Cairns Post — 14 February 1884

PORT DOUGLAS.   February 7. I have not much news of interest to send you by this mail; but a few items may be acceptable. Port Douglas has lost one of her Customs boats. It is reported to have been stolen away from our inlet on a Sunday evening, and the loss not discovered till the following Tuesday morning. Since then it has been gradually recovered by small portions being   washed ashore. It is supposed that the blacks took her away, and let her drift on to   a reef. It would be an easy thing to do a bit of smuggling in our port. When we are   wanting to do anything in that line we shall   certainly choose this port as our favoured spot, for it is possible for the Customs   boat to be taken away by a few clumsy niggers, past the residences of the very ex-   ceedingly sharp sub-collector and his staff, and also the police barracks and inspector's house, we are justified in thinking it would &...

Our Neiglibours. [PRO[?] OUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] [?]ERBERTON. February 8. [Newspaper Article] — Cairns Post — 14 February 1884

Our Neighbours. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] HERBERTON. February 8.     "BEAUTY Bound to Shine" was duly es-     corted in to town from Cairns, and intro- duced to the P. M. on Monday morning. People affect to pooh-pooh the old saying "What's in a name," but I insist that a     name has considerable influence one way or the other, and when "Beauty" appeared in the dock upon a charge of sly-grog selling, she commanded the sympathy of the Bench to such an extent that she was fined £15, or one month in Townsville gaol. "Beauty,"   however, had a stocking—as a rule Beauties general have two—from which Sergeant   Breene managed to extract £7 10s. "My, soul to glory." "Beauty," we'll stick to the plunder and save your expenses back again. Beauty vanished, but it is bound to shine some- where else shortly, very probably in the   same line of business.   This d...
