Early In the day there was a decid ed slump, but during the afternoon the market improved until closing quotations came within 1/ of last Monday's rates. Assault Charge. At the Tocumwal Police Court on Thursday, Jan. 2nd, before Messrs P. Quirk and S. Hutson, J'b'P., William Brear was charged with assaulting Alexander Gormly at Barooga on Dec. 23rd. Sergt. Byrne conducted the pro secution, and Mr Whitty appeared for defendant, who pleaded not guilty. .The fo'lowing evidence was given :— Sergt. Byrne deposed"th£t on December 23;d , in company with Constable Filan, he visited BBrooga and saw the accused at the Ba rooga hotel. A Bush Fire Victim. On Moil.lay, ,21rd December, the day of many devastating bush fires through lit the Rivcrina two em ployees of Hitndnre Station, in the erilderie district, hud a most un enviable experience. They were out removing stock in the afternoon when the fire bore down up'm theni with great rapidity, and they were forced to flee for their lives. One man made for a tank and sprang in, and just kept his head above water until the flames passed by.
