LABOURS LAND POLICY Points from the Minister's Speech. [Newspaper Article] — The Land — 27 January 1911

LABOURS LAND POLICY Points from the Minister s Speech. Mr. Noil Nielsen, Labour Minister iqr Lands, unfolded ]iis party's policy ut Yass on Monday night, Hero are the points of it : - "In making this speech to-night I fully recognise my responsibility. Upon an up-to-date and enlight ened Iaml policy depends not only the prosperity of the people but their safety as well." The Labour Party's policy in re gard to immigration was to first pre pare the country for the reception of immigrants and then to let them come. The time had now come when something must be done to enable the bona-fido farmer to take up the land, and no obstacles should then be placed in the way of a man com ing here, providing he was a man of the right coloiir. (Cheers.) If wo wanted the country to prosper, if wo wanted population on the land, wo must make the country available for settlers. In the; early days the rulers of the country were not able to give the land away fast enough. This did not result hi the land...

PROTECTING TREES AGAINST RABBITS. [Newspaper Article] — The Land — 27 January 1911

PROTECTING TREES AGAINST RABBITS. Rabbits no doubt destroy more newly planted trees than any other single cause with which the tree planter has to contend. The jack rab bits are especially destructive, and it is beyond reason to expect newly planted fruit or forest trees to sur vive their attacks, unless, well pro tected. Perhaps the simplest and cheapest method is that of wrapping the stem of each tree with a piece of building paper. This costs but little, and is easily and quickly applied. JUifore going to the field the paper should be cut in strips wide enough to in sure two wraps of the stem. To hold the paper securely in jda.ee it should bo tied in at least two jilaces with good strong cord. Any of the ordinary building jiajiers, will withstand the exjiosure throughout an entire winter, and the following summer it will gradually .break down and disappear without having to be taken off. The cord will lose its strength, and break under the pressure of the tree as the latter incre...

SORGHUM AS A POISON FEED. [Newspaper Article] — The Land — 27 January 1911

SORGhUM. AS ,A POISON FEED. In a farmers' bulletin dealing with sorghum, just issued by the Depart ment of Agriculture, the author, Mr. E. M'Donald, Inspector of Agri culture, Hawkesbury Agricultural College, .makes reference to the ques tion of sorghum . poisoning. Cases of death;'lie says, have occurred fre quently amongst cattle feeding upon sorghum. It is noticed that it is onlv under certain conditions that the" crop is fatal. The young imma ture plants, when eaten by stock, are ' capable of causing death, but old plants can be fed with absolute safety. Young plants wilted through heat and dry weather are dangerous, as also are immature or young plants which have been frosted. Sorghum poisoning is of fairly common occur rence in Australia, and has also been reported from America and Egypt.
