Notes and Events. [Newspaper Article] — The Northern Miner — 27 June 1874

Notes and Events. Our usual telegram not received, though a deposit sufficient to cover three or four telegrams is now lodged in the Townsville Telegraph   Office.     Mr. Commissioner Fyfe, at the Palmer Gold- fields, has been suspended for alleged iiregu- larities in connection with the duties of his office. — Bulletin. 19th. It is good news to hear of a fall in butcher's meat to 9d per lb. Such, however is the fact   announced by Messrs. Hubert & Co., after the 27th of next month, and there is a chance of a further reduction. Why don't the bakers follow suit! We suppose Mr. Hubert will pity the people of Millchester and send a cart down occasionally.     A miner named Laurence Clester, whilst tamping a charge with a steel bar, in No. North Rainbow on Wednesday, touched and ignited the fuse, an explosion followed; the fragments of     quartz shattering his left hand so b...

[?] Police Court. JUNE 23. (Before Messrs Gill and Pelmer, [?].) [Newspaper Article] — The Northern Miner — 27 June 1874

Millchester Police Court. June 23. (Before Messrs. Gill and Palmer,J's.P.)   T. O'Kane v J.E. Rutherford, — . Assault. Mr Haynes appeared for complainant; Mr Bowker for defendant. Mr. Haynes suggested to the Bench before pro- ceeding with the case that as they were aware, and the public were aware, his client had made a very serious charge against one of the justices now present, which charge was now under investiga- tion by the Government, it would be in better, taste and be more satisfactory to the public if   that justice who must entertain strong personal feelings against his client, did not preside at the hearing of the case and withdrew. If he refused to accept his suggestion then he would certainly   withdraw the case and wait for another oppor-   tunity to bring it on when one more fitted to   hear it, and who would be free from strong per-sonal feeling could undertake to adjudicate on it. Mr. Gill refused to a...
