SMOKING WHILE MILKING. Do not allow dogs or loafers to be round at* milking time. If any acci dent occurs by which a pail-full or partly full of milk becomes dirty, do not try to remedy this by straining, but reject all this milk, and rinse the pail. We remember one day, when on a visit, seeing a milking hand smoking a pipe. Suddenly, he spoke to the cow, and the pipe - fell from the man's mouth into the bucket. He made one grab into the milk-bucket, < put the wet pipe into his pocket, and went on milking! Then, what about the ash from a pipe or cigarette fall ing about everywhere? Sack the man or boy who smokes while milking. Bad Health. One of the most general caused of bad health is the inefficient action of the kidneys and the liver. It is the function of the kidneys and liver to deal -with certain waste poisons which are being continuously manufactured in our bodies, and, when «the kidneys and liver are inactive or diseased, these waste poisons remain in the sys tem,...

PIGS FOR BACON. [Newspaper Article] — Bruthen and Tambo Times — 14 January 1914

PIGS FOR BACON. Certain modifications in the meth ods of killing and preparing pigs for bacon have been necessary in recent years to meet the demands of the consumer and curer. Among these has been the movement in favor of less fat and more lean, what is pre ferred now being a tasty, mild-fiavor ed, somewhat lean bacon, which is linely streaked ;,with fat and of firm texture. U is occasionally found in dealing with carcases for either pork or ba con that there exists ail abnormal condition in the texture of fibre of the flesh. It is soft, yields to pres | tiure, is flabby, and possesses an un natural greasiness. This class of llesh invariably cures badly, and pro duces inferior bacon. Observation has taught that it is mainly due to the various classes of food being used in improper proportions. Further experience has shown that this influence is more pronounced dur ing winter. Low temperatures exert a change upon the nature of the body fat. Animals exposed to cold are prone to produ...

GRIT A NECESSITY. [Newspaper Article] — Bruthen and Tambo Times — 14 January 1914

GRIT A NECESSITY. A lack of this causes a slow supply o£ eggs, and i£ fowls have not the materials for digesting their food, it is- impossible for them to get on, for the proper nutriment must be extract ed from the food for the production of eggs. Oyster shell grit for lime, as well as sea shell or pebbly beach grit, is best for the purpose, as it is very hard and sharp, and a small quantity goes a long way. It should be kept in a trough in the run for the fowls to help themselves to. j
