WATER SUPPLY. To the Editor. [Newspaper Article] — Coleraine Albion and Western Advertiser — 5 January 1914

WATER SUPPLY. To the Editor. Sir.—Now that Coleraine is pro gressing and booming more up-to date, its last march in that direction J being the supply of electric light by the Butter Factory, would it be too | much to ask the Wannon Shire Coun- j eil to follow in the footsteps of the Butter Factory by providing the much-needed supply for Coleraine 1 I believe a scheme could be pro pounded which would serve Coleraine for the next 10 to 15 years at a cost of between £3000 to t'5000 Is it not possible to have another dam erected further up the gully in which the railway reservoir is situated, thus preventing water going to waste when the reservoir-overflows as at present 1 Is it not also possible to increase the dam above the butter factory, and further to increase the dam near Mr. Thomas Ross' property This matter has stood in abeyance so long that it is absolutely necessary in the interests of health, fire, and general prosperity of tin; town | the matter should be taken in -Y"ours, e...

IRON FOR FOWLS. [Newspaper Article] — Coleraine Albion and Western Advertiser — 8 January 1914

IRON FOR FOWLS. Iron is present in the lowl's body; part ol tins iron is in an orsaniseu lorm in the red corpuscles ot tue blood. Tlie total amount ol iron is small, but nevertheless, it is 01 great importance, ami a deficiency re runs in anaemia. One lre<iuem!y finds that eggs laid by insulUciently led lowls have pale yolks. The coloring ot the yolic is due to pigments, and, possibly, 10 the phosplionpine termed lecithin, iron, in an organised l'orm, is found in the ash ol the egg. Vegetable loous, es pecially clover and lucerne, are rich iu minerals, and their use results in richiy-colored yolks. Anaemic, fowls may be easily treated by administer ing to each live drops ol! perchloride ol iron in a teaspoon of well-sweeten ed milk. This is a very cheap tonic, and is better in many ways than the ordinary sulphate o£ iron (copperas).

FOR THE FARMER. HOUSING POULTRY [Newspaper Article] — Coleraine Albion and Western Advertiser — 8 January 1914

FOR THE FARMER. HOUSING POULTRY i£ all poultry liouses of' the closed ill type had an end or 0110 side o£ thein knocked out, disease would dlav imsh by oue-hait', and the \jrolits l!roni 1 the birds compelled to roost in them | would, probably, be doubled. It is impossible to conceive anything more I insanitary and conducive to disease I than the ordinary type o£ towlhouse one sees iu tlie country. It is cramp-' ed, dark and without any ventilation, except the many draughty cracks. It is little wonder tha.t going irom the foetid atmosphere into olten an un sheltered yard the . birds contract colds, and soon become a prey to dis ease. It were lar better to let the hens roost in trees. The sleeping quarters of l'owls should be merely draught-proof shelters l'rom extremes ; of weather and, if winter e^gs be de sired, they should have dry scratch ing quarters for bad weather. Always have your poultry houses o^en to the north.

FATTENING POULTRY. [Newspaper Article] — Coleraine Albion and Western Advertiser — 8 January 1914

FATTENING POULTRY. The best and, at the same time most economical method ot lattemng all kinds of poultry is to ittep meU1 in conimemem lor a snort time before they are required for table, a good deal oi judgment, however, has to be exercised in deciding the length ot time tins confinement is to last, lor it overdone, even in the slightest de gree, the birds rapidly lose llesh and go back in condition. Strange as it may seem, once this begins, no amount of feeding will restore either their weight or condition till alter they have regained their liberty again. Kor this reason the poultry must be confined for too long a period before they are required.

NEWLY-ENGAGED GIRLS. [Newspaper Article] — Coleraine Albion and Western Advertiser — 8 January 1914

NEWLY-ENGAGED GIRLS. "Why-is it that a newly-engaged girl Is a thorn in the flesh to all her dis engaged sister women? To begin with—observes a lady correspondent (who is not newly-en gaged)—she is odiously sorry for you : because you don't happen to l>e a betrothed person also. You may have heaps of chances; may know that you arc really and truly quite nice, but the most ordinary girl who ever seiz ed upon her first, proposal will patron ise you until you feci almost ready to accept anyone. When she isn't irritating you, the r.ewly-engaged girl is rather funny— over the ring more especially. This sacred object for a few weeks appar ently occupies the place of sun, moon, [ stars and all light. If it can be said j to flash, it does on every conceivable | occasion. j And then, in other ways, she is so | hopelessly selfish. j But perhaps the personal vanity of ; the engaged girl enrages her femin I ine acquaintances more than any of j her numerous failings. To have to ! stand by and...
