BRANDY CREEK. TUESDAY, 21st Oct. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 23 October 1879

BRANDY CREEK. (FROM' OUR OWN CORRESPOyNDENT.) TUEssAT, 21st Oct. With the exception.of two meetings-the Farmers' Union, and the proposed division of the Bulu Buln Shire into ridings-nothing of any material importance in our township has occurred during the past week. With regard to the meetings, both of which I at-. tended, I do not consider that the decisions arrived at could be taken as a fair criterion of the wishes of the people, as the atten at both of them was comparatively small, when it is taken into consideration the large number that are on the voters' roll. The establishment of Farmers' Unions through out the colony is, no doubt, a step in the right direction if they are carried on in the true sense in which they have been initi ated; butunless this is done I am of opinion that they are not likely to succeed, as up to the time of the last meeting many people, I am informed, were not awareof the real ob jects of the society. It has been said that these unions are being for...

A meeting of the members of, the above union was held at Lee's Turf Club Hotel, Brandy Creek, on Satur day last, the chief object of which beming to take into consideration the name to be adolt- for the associa tion." Thevice-president (John Henry Esq.,)' as voted 'to the phair ni the abseiiceof th president (E. 1iintott, Esq., J.P.) The Chairman, after asking those present 'to excuse Mr. Lintott, opened the proceedings by moving that Rule 1 of theassociation'be adopted, viz.- " That the name of the union shall be the Victorian Farmers' Union, Buln Buln Shire." Mr. Rogers seconded the motion. DMr. P. J. Smith objected to the word "shire" being inserted in the rule,' as he considered that it would not be treating the Poowong and Jeethe branch fairly, and moved as an amendment that the word shire should be struck out. DMr. G. Grant opposed the amend ineint, on'the grounds that it wouldbe an insult to Drouin, and if it was called anything at-all to call it in...

CORRESPONDENCE. THE SANITARY CONDITION OF WARRAGUL. TO THE EDITOR OF THE GUARDIAN. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 23 October 1879

CORRESPONDENCE. TIIE SANITARY CONDITION OF WARRAGUL. TO THE EDITOR OF THE GUARDIAN. SI1,-Your correspondent "Sanitas" has, in your last issue, dealt with whatwould na turally be the first grievance suggested to the senses of a casual visitor to Warragul. The drain in your main street is a most keen eyesore to any cleanly mind, and he must indeed be blest with a sublime want of smell who can pass it without notice. Nature has, in this case, given to the most uninformed person a double warning that he is within range of something dangerous to health, and both sight and smell bear with them a forcible mandate to " move on," which, if promptly attended to, will be all for the victim's good. For nearly the last century a large num. ber of the most shrewd observers and clear est thinkers have set themselves the task of discovering the "causes" of diseases, and although the science is still far from perfect, there are one or two laws laid down with absolute certainty. Now of all the certai...

WATERLOO. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 23 October 1879

WATERLOO. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) A meeting was held at the Mechanics' In stitute on Saturday, for the purpose of taking into consideration the advisability of estab lishing a Farmers' Union in the Narracan Shire. .In consequence of the inclemency of the weather only about half a dozen people attended. Mr. Rollo having been voted to the chair, said that all present knew for what purpose the meeting had been con vened. He referred to the want of the far mers to be adequately represented in Par liament, and hoped that the matter would not be allowed to drop, but that the Narra can farmers would not be behind theirneigh bors in the way of looking after their own interests. In concluding, he pointed out that other callings and trades had their unions, but hitherto the farmers had had none, and it was high time that they took united action. Mr. Gallagher asked if the union was being formed for the purpose of returning the old members to Parliament, or was it being organised to oppo...

The Warragul Guardian. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1879. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 23 October 1879

_.f e : fX atfltr j (xsta.iaut THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1879. Fnoax the signs of the times-that is, if we read them aright-it is very evident that the Liberals of Victoria must bestir themselves, if they hope to. keep thQir party at the head of affairs. We are led to these remarks 'by the events of tho past few weeks, froni which it must have been apparent to the most superficial observer that, while..tho supporters of Liberal views are allowing themselves to drift'into a state of:apathy, their opponents-the followers of the minority in the Assem lily-are using every means, and resort ing to, every artifice to gain a point. ,How often does the cat play with the mous. till an imforseeii circunstisnce enables the nimble little creature to elude her cruel claws altogether ? It is to be hoped that the Liberal electors of this colony will not allow them selves, like the allegorical cat we have alluded to, to fall into careless ways because of their present feeling of security, for, instead o...

EXTRAORDINARY BIGALMY CASE. At the Court of Quarter Sessions on Friday (says the Sydney Daily Tele graph), before his Honor Mr. District Court Judge Wilkinson, Martha Garn ham, a young and very respectable looking woman, was arraigned on a charge of marrying John Simpson on the 14th July, 1879, her former hus band, Thomas Garnham, being then alive. The case possessed sonme very remarkable features. At the last sit tings of the Central Criminal Court Simpson, the secosid husband, was tried and found guilty of bigamyv, and sentenced by his Honor Mr. J'ustice Windcyer to five years' hard labor on the roads. It was then shown that within two weeks after his marriage with Martha Garnham, he contracted marriage with a Miss O'Neill, whom he had known from childhood. The presiding judge, in passing sentence upon him, characterised the ease as one of the mostheartless that had ever come under his notice. As has been stated above. OUR MAIN STREET. TO THr EDITO)E OF THE GUARDIAN. Stn,-I hear there is some probability of a road being made in Warragul, the want of which has been the only hindrance to the prosperity of the place. I ask your Council to alight at Dandenong station, andtestthe coat of screenings just laid on the platform; the same I have no doubt Mr. Henty would be glad to have taken away from his quar ries gratis.
