Germans in Britain; SllAiiTLlNG CONFESSION. ? ' . . The jGerinan .spy is a much discuss, eel person in these' days, says \ . the , .. 'ticotsmaa.?/' Therte is a of uneasiness throughout the cbuatryin * xtonnection with '''his work,, and .this uneasiness is warranted. The writer . is familiar with more ' than one .tter ''-? ..fftftni' 'itoaily t ^rho until recently was established in German. Anything which can advance the interests of /Germany is, from the Teuton point ; of view, patriotism. There are spies in this country who ai'e paid, but there are others who willingly do the work as a patriotic duty. German (es pionage here was far more acute be fore the war than it is at the pre-, sent time, as the writer has reason to kaiow. But it was, and is, a diHi-' cult matter to catch the spy red handed, so to speak, or to lay be fore the authorities sufficient evid ence so that the police may take ac tion. AGRICULTURAL DEPARTMENT NOTES. POLLINATION IN STAKED TOMATOES. [Newspaper Article] — South Coast Times and Wollongong Argus — 1 January 1915

AGRICULTURAL DEPART MENT NOTES. POLLINATION' IN STAKED TOMATOES. Growers of tomatoes are familiar with the loss every year of a large number of blossoms that drop as they wither and in consequence no fruit is- set. Several factors no doubft contribute to this loss of potential fruit — a cold snap, or thrips or too luxurious growth, among thetn— but failure of pollination , would appear to oe anoxner. . The Biologist of the .Department, ol Agriculture relates that in the Chan nel Islands, where a large crop of ; tomatoes is raised for early London market, the practice of staking is followed, and in some cases a boy is sent round daily to give eacn stake a sharp tap with a stick. It is claimed that the shaking of 'the plant promotes pollination and that -more fruit is set. The officer quoted ] testifies that he tried this practice I witlr. tomatoes grown under glass, and whatever other causes may hav«r operated, the results were excellent. (Perhaps some growers would like to try it fo...

Kembla Grange Races [Newspaper Article] — South Coast Times and Wollongong Argus — 1 January 1915

Kembla Gralige Races , The Kembla Grange Racing Club t'&r/ '? unfortunate in the matter of '?weather for the 'holding o! its December meeting on Tuesday last, .lust about the hour of commence-, : tueirt,, the rain fell in torrents, but , , the Club hasd no other alternative )-at to go on' with the meeting, as Hie horses had arrived from Syd ' and every other provision had been made. The conditions under ?which the programtme was gone through were anything but pleasant but the sports took everything phil osophically and made the best of matters. As might be expected, the attendance w«s small, and as the . promoters chartered four special trains—three from Sydney and one frooi' ffiowra — they will naturally have to fwee a. fairly substantial de hit balance on the afternoon's tran sactions. Another factor which mili tated against the attendance was that the Boseberry Park pony . races clashed with this fixture, with the result that a big percentage of met ropolitan racing follo...

Clifton School Trouble. (To the Editor.) [Newspaper Article] — South Coast Times and Wollongong Argus — 1 January 1915

Ciiftod School Trouble* (To the Kditor.) ? v— Sir,' — In view of the fact that your paper is regarded as the leading -ournai of the South Coast, X shall be glad if you will grant me sulTicr ent space to express my deep' appre ciation. of the manner in which. ^r» J.H. O'Neill has carried out the duties of head-teacher at the Clifton Public School during the past threo months, and, further, to deprecate the contemptible action of the people of Scarborough in requesting that hu be removed. According --to your last issue, and that of a contemporary, Scarbor ough residents have decided to ap proach the Attorney-General 'witih a view to having the present teaching staff removed on the ground that when giving evidence in a Sydney Court, a few weeks ago, some of the teachers spoke disparagingly of the moral tone of the school. Now, Mr. Editor, in justice to Mr. O'Neill, and for the edification of your many sub scribers, the following facts can hardly be considered irrelevant ?Early in Septe...
