WAGES BOARDS. Some Reasons for Their Failure. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 10 November 1913

WAGES BOARDS. Some Reasons for Their Failure. ,The^. pages' board . * system was never :. intended as more than an experiment. The Government is ready, at this hour to admit that, even when the unions are stealing back to conciliation, and flinging curses at the established system' as they retreat.' But accepted in this experi mental and apologetic character, the wages' board. ,S3'stem has had its advan tages, and might have been a greater success had,,, the Government exercised more discrimination in important details, and possessed. a better conception of the relations between employers and em ployees. The grca|e.s.t. blunder of all, and one which has been the insidious cause of a great deal of the present trouble, has been the denial to the contending parties of the, right to elect their own chairmen. Instead of wages boards being essentially tribunals of conciliation above arbitral lion, they have become involved in what Master Builder J. M. Pringle well described as 'bushlawyer...

THE EMPLOYER EMPLOYERS ORGANISE! [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 10 November 1913

THE EMPLOYER . EMPLOYERS ORGANISE! . The urgent necessity for closer organisation on the part of employers has been emphasised by the New Zealand strike. Business there is at a standstill, and it would appear that what ever is done, employing interests will receive last consideration of all. of N.S.W. employers into closer unity is the forthcoming general election. A repetition of the Labor regime is about the last thing any employer could desire; but if the dose is not to be repeated, there must be still greater organisation among employers. Join the' Employers' Federation to-day.

EASY-CLEANING CASEMENTS. The Safety Reversible Window Co., Sydney, draw the attention of architects and builders to their EasyClean ing Casement Window, which completely meets all the points so badly missed in the ordinary type of casement. Not only is the cleaning easily affected inside the room, but the ventilation is considerably improved also. The simplicity of the design and the added strength of con struction are admirable, and the cost of the fittings is very moderate. The Company have received instruc tions to alter the whole of the- casement windows in Challis House to tin's new design, and for villas and cot tages it is invaluable. The Company claim that it is in every way worthy to be ranked as a brother (or sister) of their well-known 'Safety Reversible' Box Frame type.

GENERATING ELECTRICITY. A Great Opportunity. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 10 November 1913

GENERATING ELECTRICITY. A Great Opportunity. What wonderful wealth of water power N.S.W. possesses for the genera'tion of electricity was fur ther emphasised by the recent presentation of a report to Premier Holman concerning the proposed harnessing of the Shoalhaven River. The Chief Electrical Engineer points out that the quantity of falling water would give off at the generator con tinuously 10,000 horse-power. If all this power were to be used for electro-thermic industries, or for cement making, or other manufactures, which are 'carried on practically continuously, a plant of this capacity would be all that would need to be pro vided. If, on the other hand, the whole of the power were to be used for electric lighting and supply for ordinary industrial purposes, the maxi mum demand would be: at least three times the - average demand, or 30,000 electrical horse-power. The estimated cost of the former scheme is, in all, £520,000, the annual expenditure, including '?interest arid si...
