Our Letter Box. THE COUNCIL'S NEW YEAR GIFT. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 17 January 1914

Our Letter Box. THE COUNCIL'S NEW YEAR GIFT. To THE EDITOR. Sir,-I am sure the ratepayers of Regent and Westminster streets feel grateful (?) to the council for their New Year's Gift, which took the form 'of a letter demanding extra payment for the making of the said streets, and no doubt commend themselves to all who use these two well made roads. Those who had the great honor of supervising the making of these streets should surely have their photos hung in the Council Cham bers as expert street makers, for the streets named are a disgrace to any council and now the rate payers are called upon to pay the piper, 5/- or 6/- a foot, for such street making is beyond all reason. Now getting back to the council's new year demand, which put the ratepayers in a nice mood for the New Year. Why was the estima ted cost by the council two thirds of that which the ratepayers have now been asked to pay. The streets have been finished about 12 months or over. Might I ask who has been paying the ...

Australian National Sentiment. [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 17 January 1914

Australian National Sentiment. There is, perhaps, nothing in greater need of stimulus and de velopment than an enlightened patriotism. As a young people growing out of swaddling clothes of infancy and emerging into youthful strength, those of the older generations are to a large extent obsessed with the associa tions of their earlier life, when Australia was a mere series of isolated communities with differing interests .and the customs and traditions of Great Britain - the land of their fathers-overshadow ed and obliterated the aspirations which were beginning to find articulation. There' was a con stant and persistent endeavour to approximate our habits and measure our growth by that of the "old country," from which our fathers came, to (as a N.S.W. school inspector recently said) the 'discouragement oi Australian literature, Australian science, Aus tralian manufactures and inventions - all Australian life and labor and living. Some of the first-born on Australian soil still live ...
