RAILWAY SIDING AT.ELSTERN=-" WICK. A MEETING of contractors- and others was held an Tuesday evening last at Rear.. don's Hotel, Calfield, to take into con sideration the best steps to be devised uwit the object of requesting the railway depart ment to have a siding at the Elsternwick station for'gencral merchandise. MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS. Shire of Moorabbin.     EAST RIDING.     The contest in the East riding of this shire was very keen, notwithstanding the fact that the retiring member (Robert Keys) has for some time before the vacancy occurred, and is up to, the present dan- gerously ill. A strong committee acted for him and vehicles bearing posters with "Vote for R. Keys, your old representa- tive "were running about in all directions. Mr R. Mills, the successful candidate, also had a good working committee and al- though each side did their level best to en- sure success, and there was the usual   amount of election squibs, the utmost good feeling prevailed. Shortly after half-past five o'clock the re- turning officer (Cr Comport) from the poll- ing booth, the Protestant Hall, Cheltenham, announced the result to an audience of nearly 200 ratepayers. The numbers were: Mr Mills 224, for.Mr Keys 209, thus giving the former the post...

The Leader. JUSTICE TO ALL. SATURDAY, AUGUST 13, 1887. MOORABBIN SHIRE COUNCIL ELECTIONS. [Newspaper Article] — The Elsternwick Leader and District Record — 13 August 1887

The Leader   JUSTICE TO ALL. SATURDAY, AUGUST 13, 1887. MOORABBIN SHIRE COUNCIL   ELECTIONS. One result of the contests on Thurs- day, is that Mr. R. Keys, Senr., who has long and faithfully represented the East Riding, has been defeated by Mr. Robert Mills. This will doubt- less be felt as a sore blow by the old and retiring veteran, but it may largely, if not exclusively be attri- buted to his great age and failing health. In the Civil Service, it has been deemed needful that officers re- tire at sixty years of age, and there is a time when it is perhaps wiser to retire from the representation of a municipality or any other body than cling to the last to office, even though actuated by a strong sense of duty. Mr. Keys, whose record we believe is unblemished, might have retired on his laurels with good grace and not entered the field of combat. His defeat need not be considered as im- plying a lack of confidence in him as a representative, but as indicatin...

The Leader. JUSTICE TO ALL. SATURDAY, AUGUST 20, 1887. RAILWAY SIDING AT ELSTERNWICK. [Newspaper Article] — The Elsternwick Leader and District Record — 20 August 1887

JUSTICE TO ALL. SATURDAY, AUGUST 20, 1887. RAILWAY SIDING AT ELSTERNWICK. IN none of the suburbs of Melbourne, perhaps, are there more evident signs or progress than at Elsternwick. The territory is extensive, elevated and picturesque and most suitable for villas and mansions. The rapidity with which these are being erected is simply marvellous! .One serious drawback, however, to the extension of building is the great inconvenience and unnecessary cost entailed in con struction owing to there being no railway siding for goods traffic. We are not sure that the Railway Depart ment is altogether to blame in this matter. It is the duty of the Com missioners to see that the funds placed at their disposal are not thrown away in unnecessary or useless construc tion. And until very recentlyU the necessity for a goods' siding either did not exist or was not apparent. But with the-rapid extensiorn that has taken place recently, all this has been altered, and we hesitate not to say that the De...
