MISCELLANEOUS. [Newspaper Article] — South Bourke and Mornington Journal — 10 January 1877

MISCELLANEOUS. -o- The Board appointed by the Government to select the stone for the construction of the new Law Courts met on Saturday, and made their final selection. Some idea of the labor imposed on the board and the Govern ment analysts in making the choice may be formed when it is stated that they had to make their selection from sixty-nine samples of stone, many specimens of which were carefully dressed. The stone obtained from Mount Sturgeon or Mount Abrupt, two hills in the Grampian ranges, and within easy reach of the Ararat and Hamilton Railway, has obtained front place in the estimation of the board. The Spring Bay (Tasmanian) stone has also been placed in the same posi tion as the stone obtained from the Gram pians as far as quality is concerned, but it is inferred that the former will have the ad vantage; as it will not be subject to expo sure to salt air, and will not have to be carried so far. The. Maflra, Gippsland, stone was, if anything, better than the tvo previo...

CORRESPONDENCE. [Newspaper Article] — South Bourke and Mornington Journal — 10 January 1877

CORRESPONDENCE. To the Editor of the South Bourke and Mornington Journal. SIR, - I cannot but feel grateful to Ratepayer for his letter in your last issue, drawing attention to the injus- tice being done to our riding by a section of the Cran- bourne Shire Council, and for exposing the attempt to annihilate the efforts on the part of the Yallock riding representatives, in providing for the benefit of such riding, and upsetting what has taken years to accomplish. The facts, as far as I can ascertain, are that the Presi- dent, .to satisfy a standing grudge. is using his whole energies to injure our portion of the Shire, and, more rcmarkable still, has succeeded in inducing the colts (who are without minds of their own, age, experience, or the moral courage to judge for themselves) to, lamb-like, follow the leader, irrespective of consequences. In times past, Sir; the Council was differently constituted. Gen- tlemen of standing, experience, common sense, and above all, disinterested in...
