STATESMEN IN THEIR DRESSING-GOWNS. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 30 September 1905

STATESMEN IN THEIR DRESSING-GOWNS. Some posthumous reminiscences of Lord .Rowton are published in the ' Nineteenth Century ' and natur ally afford entertaining sidelights upon the personality- of Lord Boaconsfield. 'Very interesting was his account of . tho way in which ho became Mr. Disraeli's private secretary. They mot at a country house where Lord Rowton, as quite a young man, entertaizied the company by singing nigger songs and dancing a breakdown. Mr. Disraeli was delighted, and tho next day he went- up to him and thanked him for his.ipcrfdrmancc. Mr. Corry, as ho then was, said : 'Ah, you think I played the fool !' Mr. Disraeli ' roplied : ' No ; you pleased mo so much that I want you to come and be my impresario, and the bargain was there and then concluded.' This recalls a story of Lord Der by's private secretary, Sir Pa trick Talbot. ' One day when a large party was present at Knowslcy, Lord~ Derby burst out at the table with .'.this re mark.: ' It's a curious thing one ne...

ALLEGED WIT AND HUMOUR. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 30 September 1905

ALLEGED WIT AND HUMOUR. A good lawyer is not a necessity, for necessity knows no law. ● ● ● Flirtation has been described as a "spoon" with nothing in it.     ● ● ●   Dentists are the only men who   have a right to talk of their ex- traction. ● ● ● Maud : "What do you consider   man's greatest fault ?" Edith : "His scarcity."   ● ● ● Nowadays a young lady's dress is looked upon as useless when once it is worn out. ● ● ●   A henpecked husband declares that the longer he lives with his wife the more he is smitten by her. ● ● ●     Some newspapers have a habit of abbreviating a "son of temper-   ance" and making a "S.O.T." of       him. ● ● ● There is nothing that will make a young lady stand so long before her looking-glass as a sunburnt nose. ● ● ● The Art Student : "I suppose a mule is a very obstinate creature ?" GENERAL NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 30 September 1905

GENERAL NEWS. Tho sum of £200,000 has been expended on St. Mary's Cathedral, Sydney, and it is only half com- pleted.     The total number of police in Sydney and suburbs, with a popu- lation of 518,670, is 987, and in Melbourne and suburbs, with a population of 508,450, 775.         It is queer how people who eat pork shudder at the idea of horse flesh being eaten in Germany. A horse is the cleanest animal there is, and a hog is the filthiest.     Mrs. Axam, wife of Mr. George Axam, for years proprietor of the Great Southern Hotel, Eden,   recently died at the new Hebrides, where the family was living.       Whites who arrest Chinese   deserters in the Transvaal are to be allowed 20s for each man captured, the amount to be ultimately taken from the wages of the deserters.      ...

AUSTRALIAN BUSHRANGING. THE EARLY DAYS. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 4 October 1905

AUSTRALIAN BUSHRANGING. TIHIIE IB-A-IR/LIT ZD-A/5TS. By CHARLES WHITE. ' I'll como to that presently, but I must tell you something about my story or you will not understand me. I was discovered in the vessel, concealed among the cnsks,by the searching party, and brought on shore with my wife; and you know, I suppose, that the pun ishment is death. But Colonel Davoy — he was Governor then— let me off, but I wns condemned to work in chains in Government employ. This was a horrid life, and I determined not to stand it. There wero one or two others in tho chain gang all ready for a start into tho bush if they had anyono to plan for them. I was always a good one at headwork, and it was not long before I contrived ono night to get rid of our fetters. There were three others besides myself. Wo got on top of the tvhH very cleverly, and first one dropped down (it «-as as dark us pitch and we could not see what became of him), then another dropped, and then the third.
