An Interesting Collection. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 December 1895

An Interesting Collection. Dr. Cyprus Adler is making a collection of object lessons in Jewish ceremonies for exhibition by the Smithsonian Institution in the Govern ment building at the coming Cotton Exhibition at Atlanta. The exhibit is divided into two parts, one section being devoted to Biblical archeology proper, and the other to a collection from Palestine and its neighbonrhood, making clear many otherwise ooscure reterences to tne Bible. In the first group will be (1) a repro duction of the temple tower of Babylon : (2) the only collection of Hittite objects ever exhibited ; (3) a collection of Egyptian antiquities ; ( 4) a group of all the gems mentioned in the Bible, and another 6t all the musical instruments ; (5) a case of figures illustrative of Jewish religious ceremonials, and a model of the high priest's breastplate set with its emblematic jewels. In the second section will be found (1) a collection representing the natural history of the Bible, each of the animals be...

Correspondence. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 December 1895

$,oxxe$ponbence. We do not accept responsibility for opinions expressed oy correspondents. Hebiw Restrictions To the Editor of the Hebrew Standard. Sir, — I was very much interested in your article from the ' Worcester (Mass.), Telegram ; but, in my opinion, it does not go far enough in application to the Modern Jews living in Aus tralia. It is exceedingly difficult for any jew residing outside the charmed radius of the large cities where there are Jewish congregations, to live as a jew should do. If he is in business Saturday is the only day in' the' week that he can hope to pull up a bad week's business, and in most cases the closing-up on Saturday in a country town would mean the non success of his business. But supposing he does keep the Sabbath day, he cannot keep a Kosher house. He must either eat trifa meat or he and his family go without that necessary and nutritious food.': Unless he is a f airly wealthy man he 'can- not attend a Jewish place of worship, even once a year, i...

To the Editor of the HEBREW STANDARD. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 December 1895

;#' ? : ? To the Editor of the Hebrew Standard. Sir, — I w»uld express the hope that you will receive sufficient support, especially as you promise to devote any necessary space to publish the proceedings of deserving Communal Insti tutions. You must not expect much enthusiasm— this is not quickly aroused here, whatever be the pr oject concerned. As regards a new periodical, support generally comes from varied classes. A few work for the love of the labour, and in the hope of helping in the cause of Judaism. Others assist because they recognise that the proprietors of a journal, though perhaps not having within their grasp the power to confer much benefit either upon institutions or indi viduals, may yet be well qualified- to act r the scorpion's part and cause a great deal of vex ation and anxiety. Some help in return' for the shillings — only shillings — gained by their efforts. They work for anybody, even ' the gentleman in - black '— or one as crooked as a boomerang — if the gam...

Our Melbourne Letter. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 December 1895

Our Melbourne Letter. A silly canard, that there was a possibility of a union between the two Melbourne congre gations has been taken seriously and duly reported. No single individual in the com munity, that is in touch with public movements; ? would for a moment entertain the idea that, after the prolonged and fruitless negotiations recently entered into towards a contemplated MMAMa^MAUM v&vuj w**w ±.*A.\sJ.KJ\J\Al. ±X\s \J\J±±g£.1 Cgfl L1AJJ.X would propose, or the East Melbourne give ear to any such proposal. That a union is advisable and it must come, is to be admitted ; but the junior congregation feels too keenly the smart of their recent underserved rebuff, to place itself, for the present, . in the position of receiving similar treatment again. Nor could the senior congregation, with any decency, urge a fresh . proposal till the sting has disappeared. ..'.'?-'. Electricity ia Bible Times. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 December 1895

Sleetricitv m Bible Times It is now suggested that Moses was an electrician, and knew the mighty secrets which Edison and Tesla have so vastly utilised. The ' American Israelite ' tells us that, in the construction of a safe deposit for the tables of the law, Moses gave evidence that he possessed a pro found knowledge of electricity. Reject ing all the trees that grew in Palestine, he imported from Europe, through the Phoenicians, a quantity of fir- wood, which is among all timber the best noiv conductor of electricity,' and made from it a safe deposit box, which lie. lined inside and outside with beaten gold, one of the best conductors of electricity, and thus the A.rk of the Cove^nnt was con verted into a storage battery, the carbon in the fir charging it. ' No modern electrician,' says the « American Israelite/ ' could have improved on Moses' fir and gold box,' These statements about this ancient storage battery are interesting, and their interest will be increased in case their ...

HANTUCAH and CHRISTMAS. A Comparitive Study by the Rev. Dr. Strauss. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 December 1895

HANTTCAH and OHRISTMAS. A Comparitive Study by the Eev. Dr. Strauss. As so many Jewish institutions have been adopted and modified by the early Christians, so has the feast ®f Hanucab, i.e., 'Dedication of the Temple,' becoma a kind of model for Christmas. On the eve preceding the 25th of Kislev, which corresponds to the 25th of December, begins the feast of Hanucah, which is celebrated m remembrance of the victory of the heroic Maccabees over the hosts of the Syrian King, Antiochus Epi phanes, 164 B.C. (Compare I Book of Maccabees, chapter 4). Judas Macca beus, having purified the Temple of Jerusalem from the idolatrous abomina tions with which the Syrians had deae crated the altar in the Temple, reconse crated or rededicated it to the worship of the true and only God. The Christmas eve (the German Weihnacht) is likwise celebrated on the evening preceding the 25 th of December, and this festival, therefore, begins accord ing to Jewish fashion on the previous evening, as according t...

ENGLISH NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 December 1895

ENGLISH NOTES. At Exeter the Synagogue in Mary Arches, Street erected in 1784 and restored in 1884 (the centenary of its erection), has now been re opened after being closed for seven years. The Rev. Isidore Myers, B.A., has met with a most cordial reception in New York* , His first public appearance was on the occasion of a lecture on ' Zionism,' which drew an immense andience of old and young to the Hebrew Institute. The Kev. Dr. H. Adler, Chief Rabbi, preached in the Great Synagogue, London, on the Day of Atonement on the message contained in, Isaiah lvii, 15-18. He spoke of the covetousness and; the love of gain as the besetting sin of our time. This was not the golden age, but the age of gold, when covetousness, 'Lady of ignoble competition and deadly care,' held everywhere her deadly sway. She ruled with equal power in the gilded saloons and marble halls of the West as in the humble habitations of the East.   He called upon his hearers to resist every &nbs...

PUBLISHER'S NOTICE. Sufficient copies of this Journal have been issued to reach every Jewish home in the colony. We appeal particularly to those who may be able to afford the amount of subscrip tion to send it along; but, on the other hand, we do not wish to burthen anyone, and as long as we consider the receipt of the paper in a home as being looked upon as a message to keep the tenets of our faith before notice, we shall feel that our work is not in vain— more especially as we know this may be the only Jewish intelligence received in many of the back parts of the colony from one year's end to the other.

MAN'S BEST VIRTUE. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 23 July 1897

WW$ BEg¥ VI^fQE. ? ^r In the Jerusalem Targum it is recorded that during the building of the Temple, the illus trious Solomon, King of Israel, had frequent occasion to exercise his judgment in deciding cases of dispute, which occasionally arose between the workmen, and from the satisfaction which his decisions invariably gave, acquired tne surname or tne wise, a title 01 wnicn he became at last so vain that the Great Archi tect of the world, by whom, doubtless, he had been inspired, thought fit, in His mercy and wisdom, to reprove him ; for, as the Rabbinical writer Tarasi justly observes, ' Vanity is a serpent that devoureth the core of wisdom.' One of the overseers or men entrusted with the direction of the work and the payment of the men, being summoned to attend a meeting of his class, called to him two of the craftsmen, and placed in their hands a sum of gold, directing them if he did not return by the ap pointed time, to pay the hire of their fellows -in the usual peculiar and...

I have the honor to introduce, my second venture in Hebrew Journalism, to the favour able consideration of. my friends and critics. This time— the first — I have decided to announce myself boldly as the sole Editor. Previous to the first production of the Hebrew Standard, rewrote to the Reverend Dr. Adler, the Chief Rabbi, explaining my intention and asking his support. On publication of the Stan . .;.}, dard, a copy was posted to the Venerable Rabbi. # ' '' I was much gratified to receive a letter of acknowledgment and approval of my ' effort, and his best wishes for my future pros perity. THE PARIS DISASTER [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 23 July 1897

THE PARIS DISASTER The awful calamity at the Bazaar, although' for a charity in which Jewish institutions could. not participate, has evidently received muchi assistance from the wealthy Jewish families. Only two Jewish victims are recorded. There were narrow escapes, nevertheless. The wife of the Grand Rabbin of Prance had arranged a stall, but selected another day instead of the iatal Tuesday to preside. An impressive andi solemn service was held over the remains of tha victims, and an eloquent sermon was preached - by the Grand Babbin from the text— 'Ex- amine and judge if there be a grief comparcible to mine.' The disaster has once again brought, into evidence the un sectarian philanthropy of the Jews, As mentioned, the Bazaar was ex clusively for Christian charities. This in tention has unhappily been frustrated, but, in' order that the Christians should not suffer,. Figaro opened a subscription list. Over half a million francs have already been received. The largest donators a...

'O Eternal ! open thou . my 'lips, that my mouth may declare thy pra, ise.' In selecting this oft repeated prayer, for our opening leader we accentuate the wish for the power of Divine Guidance. For many gener ations the beauties and glories of Judasim have furnished a most attractive theme for the poet and orator. The best thought of the brightest minds has been given to extol the merits of a Jewish .life,- and its praises have been sounded in oration, in story and in song. The perusal of the most ancient Hebrew literature demonstrates that the ground has been thoroughly covered, and nothing appears to be left for the latter day eulogist but to follow in the footsteps of his predecessors and present the same well known facts, the same familiar charms, although they may be clothed in different language. Nor can the journalist of to-day hope to compete, in clearness of style or beauty of diction, with the many gifted writers and speakers whose masterly efforts illumine the pages of Je...
