With this issue we present our readers with a calendar for 1914. Christmas holidays locally passed quietly. On Christmas Eve families were seen busily shopping to the accompaniment of tin whistles, trumpets, mouth organs. etc. Fathers and mothers were secretly buying toys, while the little ones were eating ice cream. etc., and eagerly discussing what Santa Claus would bring them: Christtu-as Day was dirty and dusty and nmdi; everyone feel uncomforti able and irritable. On Boxing Day bett:r weather was experienced. A number of local residents had the unpleasant experience of over two hours' wait for the " fast" train to Mildura on Christmas norning. The train was late eaving Melbourne and did not; irrive here till about 7.30, and was beaten to Ouyen by the goods rain. Ouyen Public Library. The Ouyen public library was officially opened yesterday by the Shire President, Cr H. W. Picker- ing, in the presence of a fair num- ber. In declaring the library open,   Mr Pickering said that he thought the institution was a necessary one and should receive the support of all. The building is divided into two rooms—a public reading room and a members' room. In the reading room will be found the daily papers and as main country papers as can be obtained. In the members' room, about 300 books, by favorite authors, are available to select from. The reading room will be open daily from 9.30 a.m. to 9.30 p.m. The library will be open on Tuesdays from 7.30 to 9.30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7.30 to 9.30 p.m.

General News. Crops in the Yiatpool-Carwarp district are very disappointing to the settlers. Local estimates vary, the stand beinzt very uneven. Here aund there as high as three bags to the acre are stated to have been taken of, but on a very great deal of the land there is nothing worth rstripping and the average mulnst be very low. George Cooke and Elizabeth Cooke, found guilty of man slaughter in connection with the death of their son, John Arthur Cooke, aged 13, at their home in Fitzroy, each sentenced to 12   months imprisonment. The evi- dence disclosed a shocking case of neglect. The " New York American" pnblishes'photographs showing how Mexicans drive children into the sea and shoot them, allowing the tide to carry off the bodies. The journal also quotes Mr Russell Milward, an English traveller, in support of its statement that un believable barbarities exist in 1 Mexico.
