Letters from the Front. A NARROW ESCAPE. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 8 July 1916

Letters from the Front. A NARROW ESCAPE. The following letter has been received from Private Jack Medhurst, from some where in France, by his father in Greens borough Dear all at home, Just a few lines to let you know that so far I am still safe and sound. I recently got three letters from home in a bunch. They were very welcome. I have not yet received any of the presents you have sent me, men tioned in previous letters. Well, there is not much news to tell you, although we had a bombardment the other night. Fritz got angry with something, and tried to blow us off the map, but he did n't get this child, altlsough it was near enough. You would have smiled to see us crawling on our tummies along the wet trench. I was wet through when we got to our post. AUSTRALIAN WOMEN'S NATIONAL LEAGUE. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 15 July 1916

AUSTRALIAN WOMEN'S NATIONAL LEAGUE. The I-Ieidelberg branch of the A.\.W.N.L. held its twelfth annual meeting in Scots I-Iall, 1-Ieidelberg, on Thursday afternoon. The hall wvas tastefully decorated with the Leagucte's colours (purple and prim rose), and was filled with members and friends. Mrs. I-I. Burrell said they would be sorry to hear their president (Mrs. D. H. Maling) had lost her sister-in-law the day before, and therefore would not be present, and she asked all to stand and give a silent vote of sympathy 'to her in her bereavement.,- After that was done, Mrs. Burrell introduced the vice-president from the Central (Mrs. Crocker), who then took the chair. After the minutes of the annual meeting were read, the hon. secre tary (Mrs. P. Robertson) gave her report, the number of meetings, and patriotic collections. We had lost three members by death, three have been transferred to other districts, and thirteen new names have been added; the membership is now 255. She said the co...

KINDERGARTEN CONCERT. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 15 July 1916

KINDEIGAR?T'REN CONCERT. It is a long time since any kind of en tertainmIent evoked so much interest and attracted so large an audience in Ivan. hoe as the Kindergarten concert, held in St. James's Parish hall on Saturday evening last. When it is remembered that none of the performers had reached the ripe age of nine, and that their pre paration for the event was entirely car ried out by th7 stalf of young ladies who teach them on Sundays, the interest and attendance w-re well justified. There were nearly 500 people, young and old, present. and the pleasure and ap plause that was manifested throughout left no doubt as to how they regarded the tiny actors' efforts; in fact, many demands by the large audience for repe titions had to be denied as time did not permit. Another tribute to the interest excited was, although naturally there were many children present, the noise made was so slight that with the excl lent acoustics of the building, none of the performance was inaudible at the...
