Yackandandah Police Court. [Newspaper Article] — The Yackandandah Times — 16 August 1890

Yackandandah Police Court.     At the above Police Court on Mon- day last there was only one case on the cause list. Mr Rowan,   P.M., attended, and Mr J. Haig, J.P., also occupied the bench. Alfred King alias Robinson, was brought up                         by Constable Middleditch, of Stan- ley, on a charge of larceny of cloth- ing, valued at forty shillings, the   property of Mr Yea, of Kiewa road. It appears that accused is serving a   sentence in the Beechworth gaol for stealing a gun, but before he went to goal he informed Constable Middle- ditch of the robbery of clothing. En- quiries were consequently made, when it was found that the articles in question had been missed by Mr Yea. The charge as above was accordingly entered against him. William Yea, a splitt...

Bnblfo Meeting at Sandy Creek. A largely attended meeting of residents of Sandy Creek was held on Thursday evening, the 14th inst., for the purpose of considering mat ters in connection with the common. It appears that complaints had been forwarded to the Lands Depart ment, respecting its management ; and the Mining Jtsoard were accord ingly instructed to report as to the allegations. The letter received by the Board is as follows : — ' Department of Lands and Survey, ' Melbourne, ' 16th July, 1890. ' I beg to inform your Board that complaint has been made to this De partment -that the Sandy Greek Gold field Common is grown over with briars and Bathurst burr, that rabbits are becoming numerous thereon — that no money is spent on it to keep it clean — that a portion thereof is fenced in by Mr. Patrick Quirk, and another portion by Mr. Daniel O'Neill, without authority — that the stock de pasturing thereon belong to large selectors, in. respect of most of which no fees are paid — and ...

Fruit and Vine Growing. I [Newspaper Article] — The Yackandandah Times — 23 August 1890

Fruit atul Vine Growing ? ^ j No. I )S -. The staple industries of this dis ixict will, in the not-distant future, be fruit-growing. At present, the country of the north-east is in an in fantile state ; in fact we might as well own to being 'in the bush'. We cannot but admit this, for taking Yackandandah as a centre we are suirounded by indigenous growth, j Here and there we find cultivation, but compared to the unreclaimed area the cultivated plots, in the aggregate are almost nothings What is the state of affairs in the midland and western portions of the colony ? The land is fast, being turned over, and the cultivated areas preponderate over the * uncultivated portions. Scarcely; an. acre of land is available for selection, and in some parts of the Wimmera they are already begin ning to complain of 'soil worn out'. The Y ackandandah district can, there fore, rejoice in the prospect of better 'days in store. But great factors in 'our rate of progress : will be our en terprise and ...

WAIFS and STRAYS. [Newspaper Article] — The Yackandandah Times — 23 August 1890

WAIFS and STRAYS. If there's a hole in a' your coats, I rede ye tent it ; A chiel's amang ye takin* notes. And, faith, he 'II prent it. — Bubks The principal topic of conversation this week has been the weather. It puts me in mind of a parody on the verse inspecting the seasons. I have not had the opportunity of spending a twelve-month in Yack, so shall not be able to say whether it is applicable 'to this district or not until I have been a resident of that standing. The verse referred to is as follows : — Dirty days hath Septembe, April, June and November, February twenty-eight alone, All the rest have thirty-one, . Without a blessed gleam of sun. * * * * * It is to be regretted that the rail way contractors are being delayed. Host of us look forward to the time when we shall see the iron horse steaming into the township ; but bad weather means delay, and if it con tinues for a few weeks we need not expect to be able to ride in a railway carriage to Beechworth till after next Easte...
