WJiy Butter. Goes Rancid. SOME HINTS TO PREVENT IT.. There.ls a peculiar- form of bacteria which,/when it finds, a. proper place, in •which"to.multiply, develops an acid with a well-known and well-liked flavor.; This is the. form of bacil}us which gives the special -'flavor,'to.• fresh- butter, and its' favorite multiplying place is in the cream of milk. So, the delicious flavor that belongs to good butter is due to a special germ^, In former days some dairies were famed for the especially good tastejof their; butter, which was ascribed to the. food given to the cows.'; Other dairies close at haii<d, though the cows" supplying them w'C-re fed on exactly the 'same food, could never attain "to the "same flavor; The bacteria, were at the bottom of the mischief all the time. The germs in the one dairy were of the exact kind that ■(vauld give the proper butter-flavor to the cream-fat. In the second dairy, the same bacteria had at first been"present, but, perhaps, owing to a de...

HEALTH HINTS. [Newspaper Article] — Canowindra Star and Eugowra News — 14 January 1910

HEALTH HINTS. Tf bedrooms are very cold a large .lamp kept burning gives a more uniform beat than a fire, and Is less expensive. To sleep under heavy bedclothes is most Injurious to health, as it weakens Ihe body, and also tends to exhaust rather than benefit us when we wake in the morning. It |s a great thing to thoroughly under stand what simple antidote to take It one ,ls so unlucky as to swallow poison ot any kind .through mistake or otherwise. Sweet oil is found in nearly every house, and a half pint of It taken immediately is art effectual antidote to almost all poisons. In case of whooping ncough a milk diet is necessary. OVERDONE SPORTING ATTIRE. [Newspaper Article] — Canowindra Star and Eugowra News — 14 January 1910

OVERDONE SPORTING ATTIRE. There Is an ever-increasing tendency on the part of Englishmen to overdo the dressing for the sports in1' which they participate. The motorists' "get up" is much too heroic! Shooting men and anglers usually adopt a st'yl$ which is workmanlike and comfortable; But I have met with an otter-hunt whose followers we first mistook for a detach ment of the Salvation Army! Some golf clubs are not free from this absurdity of fantastic clothing, called club colors. .—"Sporting and Dramatic News.'

COST OF IMPERIAL DEFENCE. There can be little doubt that, when tbe .Imperial Conference o£ 1806 or 1307 riieets, tlie question of Colonial contri butions to Imperial dcfence will be put before the Colonial representatives In some definite enough form; for the taxation of Great Britain has become enormous; and it is uri|ikely that the British taxpayer will al!<>w any delicacy of feeling for the Colonies tu deter him from asking that each shall pay a fair share, according to benefits received.— "Pioneer," AUahabad.
