"URGENT" TELEGRAMS. [Newspaper Article] — The Tamworth Daily Observer — 31 December 1910

"URGENT" TELEGRAMS. The holiday telegra'pliic arrangements wore a source ot disappointment, and per haps pecuniary loss or savins to some peo- i pie. Hitherto, telegrams could he dispatch- i ed.on Boxing'Day, as on ordinary days, but : a new regulation came ,ln£o operation this : year, which limited tlio transmission of wires from 9 to B.30 p.m. only. As is well known, Boxing Day is set apart for import- 1 ant races, held in Sydney, and early in the morning, anxious Inquiries wero being; made in the environs of tho. looal post ofllce re garding the probability or improbability of getting "wires away." A spectre of doubt and uncertainty seemed to hover above a knot of persons standing on the corner. It is remarkable the number of "urgents" that were represented in that group. Tho nature of tub "urgents" was not disoiosed, but a Shrewd guess-is made that several gentle men whose signboards are thoir bags, and who ,were at Randwlck on 'that day, know a deai about it. Possibly the Postm...

Will tho people ap preciate the change? Wo beliovo so. Old associations depart,- but a retciitivo momory will keep green in recollection's store their wonted beauty. WAITING AT THE GATES. [Newspaper Article] — The Tamworth Daily Observer — 31 December 1910

WAITING AT THE GATES. People.whose homes are reached through Fitxroy-street. have n grievance to venti late. Three times r. day are shunting oper ations conducted at the railway yards, and as many times during the. 21 hours are pedestrians and vehicular traffic temporarily blocked at the gates in Fitssroy-street. There is always a train shunting thereabouts at S a.m., and in the evenings between C and 7. and a big black engine has the awkward habit of becoming stationary for some time right in the middle of the crossing. It is no uncommon thing to see a Peel-street busi- j ness man violently rushing to be on time, and compelled to patiently abide the iron ' horse's pleasure. The rumor that the atmo sphere about Fitzroy-street is at times heav ier than elsewhere, and assumes various hrilliant hues in the early morn, may not be true. But to put it mildly, the good will of many folk towards the Railway Depart ment. is, at specific hours, a diminishing quantity. • ,
