Horses, Cows, and Councillors. [Newspaper Article] — Bunyip Free Press and Berwick Shire Guardian — 1 January 1914

Horses, Cows, and Councillors. Tarcoola, winner of a Melbourne Cup, ran in a Malvern milk cart, aud there is reasou to tbiuk that one of the vast number of uutamed steeds at Iona may follow iu the old Belliug plater's footsteps. The eastern portion of the Shire of Berwick lias been greatly concerned daring the past mouth over the appointment of a ranger to look after the horses and cattle about the towns. It iB whis pered that the former occupant of the position, who resigned, did so iu sheer desperatiou of the cares of office. .Cr. Carney porbaps threw some light on this belief when he bluntly stated at the Berwick council meeting that " It would take a racehorse to hcad^ni!" As t\Vo-up is uukuowu iu Iona this remark clearly related to wandering horses (we dou't suppose tlio cows are quite so fast, even there). The gallant steeds that patiently pull CJooney's waggon aud Baillie's cart are, when loosed from the shafts, fail terrors to go. One old grey tuare (sort of bcil wether) has...

Sports- Carnival Bunyip Agricultural Society. [Newspaper Article] — Bunyip Free Press and Berwick Shire Guardian — 1 January 1914

Sports - Carnival Bunyip Agricultural Society. The second annual military carnival and pony races in connection with the Bunyip Agricultural Society was held on the Show Ground on Wednesday, Deo. 21st. Owing to various holiday attractions during the last week and other district sports on New Year's Day, the attendance was not so largo as expected. Nevertheless, all things considered, the meeting was supprrted well and had it been held at any other date bar between Christmas and New Yeir Diys we feel sure twice the number of persons would have been present. However, the committee is oily exp :nmenting in holding these ciruivald, and as each one is held members find further room for im provement. Both the pony and military events were keenly contesteu and quite up to the standard of last carnival, although not so many military men competed. One pony race in particular, the 14 a.u. Novelty, was a most exciting ooo. , Doris, 'Lady Vesta and ' Oaltee More were all close together at the t...
