Kadina & Mallar[?] Times KADINA, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1, 1888. WATER ASSESSMENTS. [Newspaper Article] — The Kadina and Wallaroo Times — 1 August 1888

KADINA, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1, 1888. WATER ASSESSMENTS.     WHETHER through pure " cussedness" we know not, but there seems to be a fatality about very step taken by the Hydraulic department in connection   with the Beetaloo water works. Last   year sprung a surprise upon the farmers by issuing notices under an Act which was never intended to apply outside the city. However, these were withdrawn, and an amend- ing Bill was introduced and carried. They have now proceeded to assess the district under the latest Act, and judging by the notices we have seen it bids fair to prove one of the great- est muddles that has ever been ac- complished in the colony. We give some particulars in another column which will serve to illustrate the          vagaries of the office. We understand that a number of farmers in Tickera   have determined to hold a meeting   protesting against an assessment which on the fa...

TICKERA. I AugUSt l, 1888. " j We have had some grand " cockles ' ! weather for the past few weeks, which has dose much to improve the crops. At present they look all that could be desired, although in some places'takeall' has made its appearance, but no great fear is antici pated from its ravages as yet. The Tickera Cricket Club has again emerged trom its summer recess, and has gone into training; the members have high hopes of retaining the place they oc cupied on last season'8 list of victories, for they generally managed to-come off ^ second best in tbe majority of their matches. They played their, first match for the season on the 28th July, Married v. Single, which resulted in a draw in favor of the latter, who had only one innings whilst the former had two. Tbe civil war is - still raging here, Church pillars v. Dancers, but negotia tions are about to be entered intp, and it is to be hoped that a treaty of .peace will ultimately be signed between the contend ing factions.

KADINA DISTRICT COUNCIL. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — The Kadina and Wallaroo Times — 4 August 1888

KAD1NA DISTRICT COUNCIL. TO THE EDITOR. Six,--A few days after I was elected as a councillor I was told to be very careful as to what I proposed, as if possible the Times 'would ! do all ' it could' to expose me. Of that I had no fear. You ought to be .ashamed of the report of-the meeting. You state that I .".asked if it was not, necessary to have by-laws before j we could let the roads." I did nothing of the kind, and to prove that, let me tell you that the following is a copy of the pro position which I wished to move-" That ?a application to lease a road which divides the land of two persons be not entertained unless the written consent of the owner of the land opposite the land of the applicant accompany the application." (I read this part of the proposition when T was | ruled out of order.)
