- Datl0W1 &}@$5. PUDLISI.ED EVERY TUESDAY AND FRIDAY MORNINGS "'yerolan Vincit O unin.j' FRIDAY, JUNE 5, 1883. IN a, comparatively short space of time Alexandra has attained a p?ominonnt position among the quartz mining districts of Victoria, and has done so without any wild furor of excitement, extensive rushing and abandoning highiflown represcntations, and miserable failures, wasteful expenditure of capital, and fruitless results, which have been tie characteristic features in the history of other gold. fields in this colony. From the fist discovery of gold, a few years ago, on Mlr. S1'Kenzie's station, to the present time, the place has been visited by practical miners, who have looked for. .thn_. reward_ . of their. .ionest.. Iabor within the four corner pegs of their claims, and have worked their claims in the confident expectation of being repaid from the ground itself; they have not merely put in those pegs, and then hastened to the office of the Melbourne sharebroxe...

THE MINES. ALEXANDRA. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 5 June 1868

THE MINES. ALEXAND RA. ALFRED Co., No. 1 ?N. LUCKY.-One sixteenth share in this claim was sold last week for L120, and one thirty-second for LO0. The last crushing of ten tons gave 44oz. 14dwt., and although this is a fines return, ihe close proximity of the rtch stone in No. 2 North still further enhances the vatlue of these shares. AJAx Co. (RaorsTvanD), No.5 N. LUcarK. -There is in this claim an inclined shalt, 220f't. in depth, from which most of the rich stone hitherto crushed 'was taken. A new vertical shalt has been put down (10ft., which will ti the main working shaft. In about fifty or sixty foot further sinking it is expected the reef will be reached. The last ru-hing of two tons yielded 130oz, and the stone in the reef looks fully as good as that from which this rich return was obtained. F'riitWbones Co., No. 4 N. LuoKY.-We pre informed that the stone now being taken from this claim is stacked away in bags for security. The last crushing of 20 tons gave (as may be seen by...

SEPARATION. To the Editor of the Alexandra Times. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 5 June 1868

SEPARATION. - -4--C- To the Editor of the Alexandra 7imes. Sin,--As an original correspondent, first, allow me to congratulate you on your arrival and settlement in your new locale, and give you my cordial thanks as a permanent resi dent for coming to our rescue, as being the better medium through which we (loyal sub jects) can dissolve our views in reference to local matters in which, of course, in our present state of prosperity we feel most in terested. My subject, separation, as you are aware, is an absolute fact; but we have Sbattles to fight, and one of them phis prseent w-eek, beforewe obtain our reasonable require ments.. To deal with the present, Yea is applying for a district road board, and has the audacity to ask the IIon. the Commis s;oner to include in their boundary a portion of country running up to the Acheron River, by the Goulburn, thence taking a tract of country nearly up to Kilmore, which boun dary includes land and necessary roads that touch within one and-a-q...

The more reading of a newspaper, however gratifying to the public, is not sufficient recompense fobr the labor of pro ducing it. Those who agree with us in these views will give us the most convincing proof of their sincerity, by forwarding to usi the current quarter's subscription, which is payable in advance. It is thus, and thus only, that that mutuality of interest which should always exist betwoen a newspaper and its supporters can be firmly established and continued. In consequence of the great demand for copies of our first issue, we have been unable to supply all our subscribers. Correspondence. To the Editor of the Alexandra Times. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 5 June 1868

I-4-- To the Editor of the Alexandra Times. Sri,-I have been informed, by a person who seems to know all about it, that the MaNbfield Coturier is coming to Alexandra. Now, Sir, considering the part that the Courie.* took in the separation question, and the manner that Alexandra has always been treated by that paper, any attempt to come here now is not only an insult to this place, but an evil to be dreaded as much -ii fS-f plague, or the cholera. Your appearance here has given general satisfaction; and as the want of a paper, which has for a lon t.me past been severely felt, is now supplied' we have no wish for another. In a new rising place such as this, there can be no doubt of the advantages to be derived from one properly conducted paper ; but whatever benefits we are likely to derive from one paper will be more than counter balanced by having two. In the first place they will fight like the two " Kilkenny cats," and ainstead of filling up their papers with mining and othei loca...

POLICE COURT. Thursday, June 4th, 1868. (Before J. Peterkin, Esq, J. P., and J. P. Bainbridge, Esq., J. P.) Veen v. Brewer.-This was a summons to obtain possession of a dog, alleged to have been taken from plaintiff's hut. Mr Coster for defendant, Mr Emerson for plaintiff. Mr Emerson stated that when Veen was out at work in his claim, defendant came and stole away his bitch. The dog was the property of one Barnell, deceased, who was attended through his illness by plaintiff's wife, to whom deceased made a present of the dog. T. H. Briggs stated that he heard Barnell give the dog to Mrs Veen. Barnell was then going to the Hospital, and he said if he never came back the dog should be Mrs Veen's. Mrs Veen sworn: I kept Barnell eight weeks at my own cost. On the 19th of May he gave me the dog. Theodore Veen swore he had claimed the bitch from defendant in the street. The West Coast Times of that date contains the following telegraphic news, via Panama, giving intelligence from Europe to April 8, by submarine telegraph, and from the United States to April 9 :— LONDON, APRIL 2. The Queen was at Buckingham Palace, in good health. Intense excitement prevailed in London on the Irish Church question. The debate on Gladstone's three resolutions relative to the Irish Church com-   menced on the 30th March, and produced the great- est conflict of the Parliamentary session. The question of the dis-establishment of the Irish Church is considlered settled. Victor Emmanuel is seriously ill at Turin, and ;n the hands of Italian Sangrados. He has had serious apoplectic fits. The Pope has been attacked with bowel complaint, which is considered dangerous on account of his great age. The impeachment trial of President Joh...
