U.S., allies slowly close in on al-Qaida fighters [Newspaper Article] — East Valley Tribune — 6 March 2002
U.S., allies slowly close in on al-Qaida fighters ‘There is still a lot of work to be done’ U.S. and coalition forces Tuesday pressed their landand-air offensive against al-Qaida’s mountainous hideouts in eastern Afghanistan amid the first signs the campaign was gaining ground. The Pentagon reported that U.S. forces had entered at least one al-Qaida cave complex, discovering a cache of mortars, rocket-propelled grenades and small arms. At a second unspecified location, American troops were said to have found more weapons and ammunition, as well as foreign driver’s licenses and foreign passports. Reports from the area described U.S. and Afghan soldiers inching up snowcovered mountains, using minesweepers to clear their paths. American and French warplanes flew scores of sorties over Paktia province, dropping bombs as well as decoy flares. Two U.S. helicopters were hit Monday in incidents that left seven U.S. soldiers dead. Defense officials said bombers and tactical aircr...

AmWest leads in on-time flights [Newspaper Article] — East Valley Tribune — 6 March 2002
AmWest leads in on-time flights E.V.-based carrier has 2-month streak going For the second straight month, America West Airlines led the industry in on-time performance, the U.S. Department of Transportation reported. DOT’s monthly Air Travel Consumer Report said the Tempe-based carrier had the best on-time arrival rate in January at 86.3 percent, followed by Dallas-based Southwest Airlines at 84.6 and Continental Airlines at 83.8 percent. Delta Air Lines had the lowest percentage of on-time flights, ranking 10 th at 74.9 percent. The industry average was 81 percent. "What this shows is that we are providing our customers with the high level of respect they deserve, and we’re doing it on a consistent basis," spokeswoman Janice Monahan said. DOT has said the reduced volume of air traffic following the Sept. 11 attacks may have contributed to the overall reduction in flight delays nationwide. But department spokesman Bill Mosely said America West’s improvement isn’t sole...
Your window to the Tribune [Newspaper Article] — East Valley Tribune — 6 March 2002
Your window to the Tribune Full newspaper available on Web The Tribune is rolling out an electronic edition today that allows subscribers to view a digital replica of the print version of the newspaper on their home computers. The Tribune is one of the first newspapers in the country to offer online replicas. Most newspaper Web sites provide a sampling of stories found in that day’s edition — something also available on the Tribune site — but without the graphics, photos and layout of the print version. Now, users can view each page of the Tribune as it was printed in that morning’s edition, including advertisements, classified ads and special sections such as Get Out, and can click on the news stories to see an enlarged view for easy reading. TRIBUNE: Web edition launched Essentially, the paper as you see it when you hold it in your hand now can be seen online. "It’s the best of both worlds, combining the visual impact of the print newspaper with the convenienc...
Florsheim shoe stores tighten their belts [Newspaper Article] — East Valley Tribune — 6 March 2002
Florsheim shoe stores tighten their belts Deal to buy business may force some closures in E. Valley Until a few decades ago, Florsheim shoe stores had a foot in the door of nearly every U.S. shopping mall. Today, fewer than 200 of the stores that sell the brand-name shoes remain, including three in the East Valley. Within a few months, Florsheim’s store count is slated to dwindle to 23, and the East Valley stores may not make the cut. For now, the Florsheim stores in Mesa’s Fiesta Mall, Tempe’s Arizona Mills Mall and Paradise Valley Mall remain open, waiting word of their fate from their cashstrapped parent. They are the last Florsheim stores in the Valley. Debt-ridden Florsheim Group sought bankruptcy protection Monday, but on Tuesday 11 th-hour savior Weyco Group, a Milwaukee shoe maker, said it would purchase Florsheim’s domestic wholesale business and 23 of its U.S. stores for $44.8 million. The sale is subject to bankruptcy court approval. Weyco said it will add Flo...
Orbital Science to add 60 jobs [Newspaper Article] — East Valley Tribune — 6 March 2002
Orbital Science to add 60 jobs Boeing contract gives Chandler operations a boost Orbital Science’s Launch Systems Group in Chandler expects to hire 50 to 60 mechanical, electrical and aerospace engineers after winning a contract to develop rockets for the national missile defense program. On Monday the company announced it won a contract that could amount to $900 million from the Boeing Co. to develop interceptor missiles that would destroy incoming missiles fired at the United States. The missile defense program is one of the Bush administration’s top military priorities. Orbital’s interceptor rocket will be engineered and designed at its plant at 3380 S. Price Road, Chandler, but the production of the rockets will take place elsewhere, said Orbital spokesman Barry Beneski. Still, the Boeing contract is the largest ever won by the Chandler plant, and one of the largest ever won by the Dulles, Va.-based corporation, he said. The Chandler operations have already added 110...
Gilbert restaurant shuts its doors to regroup [Newspaper Article] — East Valley Tribune — 6 March 2002
Gilbert restaurant shuts its doors to regroup Mahogany Run, which for a few years was known as Gilbert’s fanciest restaurant, closed its doors for good Sunday. The restaurant’s owner said he plans to reopen later this year with a different approach that he hopes will appeal to more local residents. "We opened up about 3 1 /2 years ago, and it took us that long to realize that the people in Gilbert just don’t want a fine dining restaurant," said owner Joel Higginbotham. The restaurant’s distinctive look stood out in downtown Gilbert. Higginbotham said he tried just about everything to attract customers to his establishment at 302 N. Gilbert Road, including lowering prices and bolstering advertising. But in the end, Higginbotham said he decided Gilbert was the wrong community at the wrong time for an upscale restaurant. Higginbotham plans to reinvent the restaurant with a sports theme and open again in October. "Our Sunday brunch worked really well when we lowered the prices, ...
