In Orator . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 14 May 1853

In Orator . A gentleman of prepossessing appearsoee stepped into our sanotum a day or two since , and said if we wanted to get up a good set of orations for the Clipper , ho could furnish them . He struck into an attitude , and gave us a specimen , as follows : Freemen , Slaves and Serfs—Tho mighty eataract of the Gnnges revelled in tho mystie simoon on the summit of Vesuvius s Toleanic crater , where the flamiog lava bursts forth in panoplies of living green , and tho last lingering ray of tho blissful abyss beneath yawns with terrific beauty for tho up heaving of the deep , deep sea . Is not this sublimity , the perifocal sublimity of the ago of reason that set loose the dogs of war to feast and fatten upon the animated remains of the last link of the bloodless Waterloo , or to revel on the turbid waters of the desolate and dreary plains of Marathon . Thrice planted he his panting leg ions on tho frowning ramparts of his coalblack steed , yet thrice again he fell amid the din , wi...

OUR REMEDY . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 14 May 1853

OUR REMEDY . Now that almost fifty fiuman beings have been suddenly tent intoj eternity , through the carelessness of the present system of railroad mismanagement , al nost every person has a remedy to prevent similar accidents in future—some recommend ing a director to be p laced in front of the Ioec motive , others this , aud others that , but th < one that pleases us most is suggested in one of the daily papers , recommending a gate to be placed at the eutratico to brid g * s , so as to keep Uie trains out I The only objection we have to this is , that the locomotive might prove stronger than the gate , and force its . way through . To remedy this , wo would advise Congress to immediately pass a national law , that gates shall bo placed at the most dangerous p laces along tie lines ef railroads , and to make the gates more secure , that the President of each road shall be compelled to hold them up . This is our advice , and it is given free .

Poor Fay . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 14 May 1853

Poor Fay . We venture to assert that Tucker , the engineer , received such poor wages , that no trustworthy man could be found to accept the situation , it is the custom on many reads to employ ( those who will work the cheapest , capability being a secondary consideration . We hope this will be inquired into . The directors of the New Haven road are doubtless as guilty aa Tucker . Poor pojr—[ poor service * .

ClfllfG CHARGE-A HEW PLAK . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 14 May 1853

ClfllfG CHARGE-A HEW PLAK . ^ Now that the new denominations of coin sire being put into circulation , it would be well for shopkeepers , and in fact all traders to endeavor to do away with the old custom of buying and selling by shillings and pence . Let ns see how this can be done , and what the con 8 cquenoc | will be in the end . A quarter of a dollar of - onr currency is always worth 25 cents , and yet if you purchase an article of the value of two or three cents , & c , you are sure , by the prosent system , to lose a half cent , and oftentimes a whole ceut . H you change a dollar bill , you will find , in nine cases out of ten , that you have just lost four cents on yo « r dollar . To a poor man , this is quite an item in the amount of his expenses , and though he may not feel it at the moment , yet when , at the end of a month , he endeavors to moke both ends meet , he will find that he is short from two to three dollars , which would go a great ways toward helpi...
