I AGRICULTURAL I SCIENCE I [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 5 January 1907

I AGRICULTURAL I SCIENCE I BULLETINS . Molasses for Fattening Cattle . —Bulletin No . 86 of the Texas Experiment Station describes an experiment In feeding molasses to fattening steers . In every case •the addition of molasses to the ration produced an increased gain . When fed in a ration of cottonseed meal and hulls , molasses lowered the cost of tho gains . When added to a balanced ration molasses gave larger gains and Improved the appearance of the cattle , but it did not lower the cost of gain . A gallon of molasses was led yearling steers per day wilh no bad results and there are no apparent reasons why larger amounts might not be fed . The molasses used was the cane molasses left as a refuse after all the crystallzed sugar obtainable has been taken out . It costs about 6 cenis per gallon and analyzed 41 . 35 percent total sugar , 2 percent protein and 6 . 26 percent -ash . The bulletin Is mailed from the above station at College Station , Texas . I THE DAIRY | [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 5 January 1907

I THE DAIRY | A COW SHED . A good cow shed for winter can not always be arranged for at this time , but you can improve the straw shed with a double stall and arrangement for three or four cows . I will describe ours . The calves are placed in half the wagon shed , fenced off with a slide gate . The double stall is on the north , for a cow and heifer or two cows of companionable disposition . The shed is constructed of old posts , old rails on top , covered with straw , some sec-ond-hand lumber used on the east of one stall and on the north . On the west where the machine poured the the straw the cold would be a long time getting through . With the frame ready before threshing , you can get a cow shed this way at small cost . The board shed is colder in severe weather and costs more money . It is with difficulty cow stables are kept clean . The cows will eat the straw where they can get at it . So boards and rails should be used all around for a framework before the straw is applied...

WATER IN BUTTER . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 5 January 1907

WATER IN BUTTER . In a local paper I noticed that a law has been enacted recently pronouncing all butter adulterated containing 16 < of moisture . It also stated that a certain gentleman made tests of the different butters and he found only about . 1 of 1 * J of the country butter to stand the test , and but a small percentage of the creamery butter . Do you know of such a law ? If there is such a law can it be rigidly enforced if above report is true ? Would it not be somewhat of an outrage upon our farmers ? I am interested in the dairy , and as I read the item concerning the above law I could not help but think that such a law could not be constitutional . What ia your opinion?—D . S . S ., Dalton , O . It is not a law , but a ruling of the internal revenue department . All butter containing 16 * of water or more is classed as adulterated and a tax of 10 c a pound is collected upon it . We learn that many thousands of dollars have been collected on butter that containe...

MAINE DAIRY ASSOCIATION . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 5 January 1907

MAINE DAIRY ASSOCIATION . The annual meeting of the Maine Dairy Association was held at Farmington , Dec . 4-6 . A large number of representative dairymen were present and the meetings were characterized by an unusual spirit of enthusiasm . An innovation this year was the presentation of 11 prize essays upon dairy subjects by students from the University of Maine , in response to the inducements offered last year by the society and others . These essays were characterized by much thought and showed careful preparation . The entering class bore off their share of honors , and all the young men were highly complimented both as to scholarship and behavior , and we believe the state of Maine has reason to be proud of her agricultural students . Prizes are to be offered the coming year . In the exhibit of butter there were no entries for fancy display , as no premiums were offered in this line . The following summary of entries with the score will be of interest : Dairy prints , 21 entri...

IPOULTRYANDBEES [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 5 January 1907

IPOULTRYANDBEES PLANS FOR A HEN-HOUSE . D . M ., of Ashtabula , 0 ., wants the plans and cost for material for a henhouse to accommodate 125 hens . That many hens would require at least five hundred square feet of space , if they were to be housed for most of the winter . If they were allowed to be out fair days and given considerable range less might do . However , ordinarily , more and not less space would be preferable . A building 45 feet long , 11 feet wide , 6 feet high In the rear and 8 feet high in front , would answer the purpose very well . Half or more of this space should be a scratching floor , and it need not be boarded tip in front if it faces the south , as it ought to do . Of course there is a difference of opinion as to the merits of an open scratching pen . If it is boarded in front , there should be an abundance of light , for there is nothing fowls enjoy more ¦ than light and sunshine in the winter . The claim that is made for the open scratching pen Is that it ...
