PRAIRIE SKETCHES. [Newspaper Article] — California Star — 6 March 1847

PRAIRIE SKETCHES. A Duel Without Seconds. The two opponents stood, with pistols cocked and pointed, looking with firm and unwavering glance, into each other's eyes. There was not another thing of life, save the summer insect, to be seen around the fair prospect. The smoakiing carcass of a newly slaughtered Buffalo cow lay between the young men, and the last breath had scarcely escaped from the the poor brute at the moment of which we are speaking. They stood now, with deadly determination dishing it their eyes, each waiting for the other to speak the fatal word of instruction. Not a spectator was there to mark the indomiteable bearing...

THE ARMV, [Newspaper Article] — California Star — 13 March 1847

THE ARMY. From Brazos St. Jago -- The schooner Fidelia, Captian Turner, arrived this morning from Brazos St. Jago, which place she left on the mormimg of the 8th. inst. We have conversed with Mr. Robertson who came passenger on her, and find that there is nothing more reliable from Monterey than we have ahead had through other sources. A report was current at Matamoras and Point Isabel when we left, and at Brazos St. Jago as late as the evening of the 7th, that the American loss in killed and wounded was about 1500. lt will be remembered, however, that the Galveston papers received by the Neptune, coutaining what purported to be the substance of despatches from Gen. Taylor received by the Quarter Master at Brazos St. Jago of the 7th, which was communicared from recollection by Captain Wetmore, of the schooner Blanch E. Sayre ; and, that it was stated that the American loss, in killed and wounded was only 500, while that of the Mexicans was said to be 2100. We learn from Mr. Robertso...

Our Town, Its Prospects The town of Yerba Buena, is now rapidly improving, and bids fair to rival ia rapidity of progress, the most thriving town or city on tbe American continent. If the necessary labor and lumber can be obtained, from three to five hUndred homes will probably go up in the course of the present year. There is room here for artizans, mechanics and laborers of all kinds. The highest wages are paid, and will continues to be paid, and the highest price far lumber, brick, adobies and every description of building materia!s, will be given upon their delivery here, payable in cash. Tie town of Yerba Buena, is no doubt destined to be the Liverpool or New York of the Pacific Ocean. At this point will be concentrated nearly all the commercial enterprize and capital engaged and invested ia the Pacific trade — The position of the town for commerce is unrivaled, and never can be rivaled unless rotae great convulusoin of nature shall produce a new harbor of the Pacific coast equ...

Later from the California Mountains Fort Sacramento, March 5, 1847. Sir -- Last night, Mr. Aquila Glover, one of the noble men that went to the assistance of the suffering emigrants on the California mountains, arrived at this post with a lett4r from Lieut.
