Dr. L. J. Czapkay.—The number of those who have sacrificed the joys and pleasures of society to gratify a transitory desire for excitement lias never been estimated. If they had been, the labors of those who have ventured, in spite of calumny and detraction, to confine themselves to that field of medical research, embraced under the head of chronic diseases, would be much better appreciated than they have hitherto been by the world at large. The efforts of a Ricord, a Sanger, and a Czapkay— the most illustrous exponents of that branch of science arc, however, dispelling the mists of prejudice which rendered the treatment of private diseases a forbidden subject to the general public, and those famous practitioners now stand forth in the light of benefactors of their race. In this State, the success of Dr. L. J. Czapkay has been so marked that envy and detraction have done their best to interfere with his prospects, but his skill as a physician had already been so established that he ...

A Ditch SekMON. —The following admirable production, delivered before a company of volunteer soldiers during the revolutionary struggle upon the eve of their going to "glorious war," was calculated to inspire them with more than Herculean courage: "Mixe Frients :—Ven vtrst you corned here you was poor and lousy, and now. mine frients, you is prout and sassy, and yous gotten on your unicorns, and dcm vit you like dongs upon a hogs back; now mine frients, let me tell you dis, a man is a man if he is no pigger as my dumb. Annual Address. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 26 November 1859

Annual Address. Delivered Before the State Agricultural Society, at iisftfVi Pair at Marysville, August 25, 1858. BY HON. SAMUEL B. BELL, OF ALAMEDA. Mr. President and gentlemen of the State Agricultural Society.— Were this the first time of the Assembling of this Association, it would be a source of deep congratulation to you, its members and supporters, and still deeper to the entire State. How shall we express our happiness, then, when we consider that this is the Fifth Anniversary of the Society, in a State not yet nine years of age ? This too, when these shores where not sought to till the ground, but to lay it waste in scattering its soil in search of its golden sands. All were worshiping at the shrine of Plutus, and Ceres was not a divinity in the land. Now, within five years, she has divided the empire with her rival; her bounteous horn of plenty, more ravishing, more inexhaustible than the gold-inclosing caves and beds of her rival, have won tlie love, not only of you, her ...

Fresno City, Nov. 12th, '59. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 26 November 1859

Fresno City, Nov. 12th, '59. Messrs. Editors: On our return to Fresno City, from our tour in the Coast Range, we must chronicle a few notes for your excellent paper. The most minute division of the Coast Range was clearly visible on the morning that we journeyed thither, and, although more than twenty miles intervened, yet the distance seemed, in the clear sunlight, to be not more than six or eight. We followed the course of the "Panoche Turnpike" to the mountains. At the foot hills, the frontier spurs of the Mt. Diablo Range, the road entered the Panoche canon. Tall, dark bluffs flanked us on either side, and in several places the rocks towered over the road in distinct strata, showing their secondary formation, for nearly one thousand feet. Solitude seemed to reign supremely through the entire length of the canon, which is, according to the survey which had been just made, six miles in length. A beautiful stream of clear, cold water, as it pursues its rocky course, with its settin...
