THE YEA HI8HE.I RAILWAY LE:AG'E. The Royal Commission on Forests and Timher, on invititaion of the Yea River Railway League, paid a visit to Toolangi on Friday last. Evidence was taken in the evening when the following' witnesses were examined -Messrs. Beach, Christopherson, Bjorksten, Downie, Rose, A. ,nd J. Smedley. The chairman, Mr. Tucker, M.L.A., at its close thanked them for the valuahle and very satisfactory in formation they had given the Commis sion. The next morning a large party, on horse back, under the guidance of Mr. J. Smedley, went a lona round of inspection, and on their return ex pressed great surprise at what they had seen declaring, it to be the finest forest that they had as yet inspected and intend later on to spend a week here, before they will be able to make any serious recommendations to the Govern ment. THE HEALESVILLE RACE CLUB. At the conclusion of the' public meeting on Monday evening last, another one was also held to con sidcr the advisability or otherwise of holding the annual races on New Year's Day, 1899. There were pre-. sent-Messrs G. S. Matthews (chair man), J. Munday, D. Sheehan, J. G. Christie, W. J. Harley, T. Tevlin, W. Ockwell, C. M'Guinness, C. H. Alex ander, T. G. Chandler (Shire Presi dent) and J. Walker. Mr. Matthews remarked that he hoped those present would recognise the importance of forming a race club, for it would be a great pity if the day was lost.
