BRIDQE CRASHE8. EIGHTLY LIVES LOST. NEW YORK. Thursday. A message from Kelso (Washing Ion) states that it is estimated that at least 80 lives were lost when n 700-foot suspension bridge across the Cowlitz Rive rcollapsed ns crowds of Cowlilz tver collapsed on their way home. A cable snapped, and one tower fell into the river, and another against the new steel bridge which is being constructed. The central span buck led, hurling scores of pedestrians and several automobiles into the water. Many of the pedestrians were rescued after clinging to the wreckage Huge bonfires were kept burning through out the ngiht to aid the rescue work. The horror of the disaster was heightened by the sudden failure of the electric, light system, throwing the en tire town into darkness.

THE TALL HAT. Nothing was prophesied more cer tainly during the war than the death of the silk hat. The ubiquitous kha ki seemed to put it clean out of count enance. Then the vogue ot the soft felt hat of the Homburg type, so often called the Trilby, seumed finally lo have, given the topper Its death blow. The growth of the mania for alt kind of games, too, seemed to work agninst this kind of bat.
