OPEN COLUMN. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — North Australian — 26 October 1883

OPEN COLUMN. LETTETJS io tlie Editor must lie couched, in respectful and simple language and as concise as possible. In every ease Hie writer's name is required, not necessarily for publication, but as a guarantee of good faith.] To THE EDITOR. Sin,-In your issue of tho 5th inst. I read a letter signed " Union Man " re- minding thc Acting Government Resi- dent of his promise to have a road made from the Margaret to the Union. There is no doubt tho Acting Government Resident is willing to do all ho can for the benefit of thc up-country people, but thc required road that the Union man speaks of would bc of very little use to thc general public. Thc only benefit I can soe to be derived from a road through the Margaret at the pre sent time would simply bc for thc ac- commodation of a few Chinese gardeners and packers, as there is no other industry on thc Margaret at present, and they have quite enough privileges already, without spending a lot of money making a road for their convenienc...

CURE FOR WHITE ANTS. [Newspaper Article] — North Australian — 2 November 1883

CURE FOR WHITE ANTS. A GENTLEMAN, who was on his way south hy the s.s. Crusader, called at our office during the stay of that vessel here, and whilst conversing on different matters, the white ant subject cropped up, and we were told of an excellent way to keep this pest at a distance. Our informant stated that at Bangkok, where he believed the ants were more destructive than here, the rice mills kept entirely free from their depreda- tions, owing to the fact that quantities of paddy seed arc distributed about thc parts where the ants are likely to prove troublesome. The name of paddy is given to the unhusked rice, which is worthless, and would only cost thc cai riage to have it landed here. If this seed has such effect on the white ants, there is no reason why it should not be shipped here, and we have no doubt that some of our pushing businese men will try its properties. Thc Rev. Mr. Shaw, missionary, re ceives 60,000 francs as a reparation for the outrage he received at Tamàtive...
