MISCELLANEOUS. [Newspaper Article] — The Cornwall Chronicle — 9 May 1835

MISCELLANEOUS. Irish Civilization.— Curious Swim mino Match. — IT the following story had occurred in any of the South Sea Islands, it would have been regarded with a feeling of pily for the savage nature of the unfor. innate natives. We take it from the Cork Southern Reporter, Into which il is copied from the Belfast Guardian, withoula word of comment. We conclude, therefore, i hat such exhibitions are too common to excite remark in the ?' first gem ofthe sea :' — On Friday, the 22nd ultimo, Mr. M., e gentleman then on a visit at Newcastle, a watering place in the county of Down, invited a few friends, male and female, to join him in an aquatic excursion. On the return of the p-rty homeward, when they were about a mile from the shore, Mr. M., after having loudly boasted of his power of buffeting the billows, challenged any of the party on board to contend with him in swimming to the shore for a small bet. Tiiis Ihe gentlemen, aware of his expert neu to skimming the surface of the w...

THE CORNWALL CHRONICLE. LAUNCESTON, V.D. LAND, SATURDAY, MAY 9, 1835. [Newspaper Article] — The Cornwall Chronicle — 9 May 1835

?HIB CORNWALL CHRONICLE. XATTNCESTON, V.D. Land, SiTvnDir, May Q, 1835. Tlie recent accounts from Sydney i Hrengtlien our opinion of the Wheat .Mar kets. The cause of the rise will be found I to originate in tlie monopoly of the article, j and not in the scarcity of it. The whole Sydney press report favourably of the year's crop, and likewise of llie season for ?owing the ensuing crop. It is repre sented moil promising— and we cannot divine tv/iy, with the country full of wheat, which constitute Abundance for present consumption, and the favourable prospect for tlie future, lite price of it should nertfj sartly he high, ft is all well enough for genllpmen possessing ueailli, to monopo lize wheat. Any man has a right to mnke the most of his means, but when a mono poly is formed, that mutt of necessity create misery and want to the poorer classes of society, it is the duty of the pnlilic journals, lit the lenst, to combine ag inst it ; and ire rejoice lo find, that the press of the Si...

LAUNCESTON, V.D. LAND, SATURDAY, MAY 9, 1835. [Newspaper Article] — The Cornwall Chronicle — 9 May 1835

LAUNCESTON, V. D. Land, Saturday, May 9, 1835. It is matter of astonishment lo us, and | indeed it mutt be to every Colonist in the Northern Division of the Island, that until this period a Bridge is wanting over the South Esk, at, or in the vicinity of Perth. The inconvenience and the loss experienc ed individually and publicly, ought to , have some weight with the Lieutenant Governor. Probably the best means to , ensure the completion of such an under taking is already adopted by the inhabitants of Norfolk Plains. They have had meet-     ing upon the subject, very recently, and will no doubt, lay before his Excellency the circumstances that now render it absolutely needful that one should be constructed. A few remark, nevertheless, from us, upon the subject, will do no harm.     It is the duty of the Government, as   much as it is its interest, to provide accom modation to the country people, to carry their produce t...
