AT HEADQUARTERS. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 3 February 1900

AT HEADQUARTERS. Os Sunday last Mr. Waldon lec tured on 'Wealth and Capital.' At the outset he pointed out that there was a considerable amount of con fusion not only among ordinary speakers on economics but even amongst political economists them selves with regard to the definitions of these two terms — Wealth and Capital — and his object in lecturing was not to enter into any controversy on the subject but' to try and render his hearers1 ideas more clear and definite with regard to the real mean ing of these terms. Wealth might be defined as an illustration : Suppose the savage subsisting on truits puts forth labor and plucks more fruit than he consumes in a day so that he has no need to labor in order to supply his wants for yet another day — such store would :xe correctly termed wealth. According to Henry George, whose latest work on political economy was appreciatively referred to, wealth consisted of natural objects that have been secured, removed, separated, or otherwise acte...

Publications Received. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 3 February 1900

Publications Received. ? I '? The Public Service Jour- ' N AL.' — We , a re in receipt of the first issue of this paper, which is to represent the views of the '' Public Service Association ' of New South Wales. Judging by the tone of the Journal the P.S.A. doesn't deal in ordinary working class stock at all ; the whole thing bears the impress of the turned up pants and tan boots of the '? Johnny ' of the Civil Ser vice. ' The Association must have nothing to do with party politics. Nor will it ... . The Association will not interfere in any way in political contests, neither in nor out of Parliament.' Correctly read, that means that «o long as there is a prospect of ! capitalism retaining its hold on the Governmental powers, the Association will uphold capi talism. A trade-union — they evidently considered it would be undignified to use such a term — that has only for its object the guaranteeing of 'at least a living wage ' for every person in State employ : that takes cognisance n...

Labor and Laws. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 3 February 1900

Labor and Laws. TO THE EDITOR. Sib. — With your permission I wish to iav before your readers the summing up of the value put upon labor by law. I and two others had the misfortune to break stones upon tha G'en Innes to Inverell road for one McPharland, We had between the three of us four heaps not passed by. the Government Superin tendent, the contra?tor stating they were not small enough. The day after in terviewinor the suner. the star/ was. they would not be taken at all, One of our mates then saw the, »uper; who told him the contractor had got more than was agreed for ; hence he would not take them. Finding ourselves done, mv mates left their work unpaid for ; they said the chances of getting any justice in Law Courts was poor. I then placed the matter before the Works Department, but they did not condescend t - acknow ledge my petition, I also corresponded with Mr. Holman, \slth u view of having a 1 this work brought out into the day li;hr, and exami ed in the interest of Justi...

OPEN COLUMN. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 3 February 1900

OPEN COLUMN. TO TUB EDITOR. CoMHAHE,— Your Queensland cor respondent, in taking to task the Rev. W. J. L. Closs for presiding at a pub lic meeting connected more or less with the Patriotic Fund, and for that he did there recite 'The Absent Minded Beggar,' gives expression to a spirit of intolerance and exclusively virtuous indignation which is un worthy his large-minded Socialist sympathies and which he would be the first to critiscise in a Christian Endeavorer. Personally, Ian op posed to the war— to all war— because I am a Christian Endeavorer ; 1 don't know whether I am a Socialist because I am a Christian Endeavorer or a Christian Endeavorer bjcause Ij am a Socialist — I was a Socialist first, anyway, and am still — but 1 do know | the Rev. W. J. L. Closs ; and a larger, broader-minded, more loving and brotherly human man I have never met— not even excepting your valued correspondent. 1 have not access to any report of the particular proceed ings, nor do I understand anything of...
