COWRA-CANOWINDRA RAILWAY. [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 18 May 1900

COWRA-CAN 0 WINDRA RAILWAY. That a light line of railway from Cowra to Canowindra through a level stretch of country is to cost £82,429 is so appalling —as shown by the Engineer's report in last week's issue — that it is essentially jT_ _j ~ ? „i. necessary uiai; 21 xuuou ouuuguuw searching enquiry should be made for tlie purpose of finding out where the enoi mous expense comes in. It is pointed out that the bridge work required is very' light, that the ruling grade is only 1 in 100, and that the sharpest curve has a 10 -chain radius. Why it should be found necessary to take the line such a. long distance down the Lachlan before, bringing it towards Canowindra sh ould certainly be enquired into, aiace that, jopl itself, means a considerable outlay lor: embankments, etc., and also the neces-. sityof such a deep cutting required on the Cowra end. It is admitted in the raport that for eleven miles tho country , over wiiicn it wm run is level, and that there would be only one intermedia...

CULTIVATION OF BARLEY. [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 18 May 1900

' CULTIVATION OF BARLEY. At the present low price of wheat many farmers are dubious as to the advisability of putting the same acreage under crop . 'Jkat has boon done in tlie past ; and ns ' sheep and stock generally are selling at fabulous prices on account of shortage, tt is evident many would-be pastoralists will find themselves compelled to fall back upon tho old product upon whieh they have depended for so in any years. To obviate, to a certain extent, the burden under which our farmers are laboring, we availed, ourselves, through informa tion given us a few days back, of com municating with J. T. and J. Toohey, Limited, 'o? the Standard Brewery, Svduey, asking to be supplied with facts relative to an offer made by them to farmers regarding the growth of Barley for malting purposes. The following ex tracts taken from their letter in reply to ours will, we trust, be of no small interest and advantage to agriculturists -who have not sown their crops— 'In answer to your encjuiry ...

THE INDIAN FAMINE FUND. [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 18 May 1900

THE INDIAN FAMINE FUND. Some of the principal farmers of the dis trict have approached us in reference to sending relief to the distressed natives of India. There are at the present time 24 millions of human beings in India suffering from a long succession of droughts, many of whom are dying daily from starvation. Tlie English and Indian Governments are relieving some nine-millions of these poor people, and have appealed to the civilised world to render further assistance. It is proposed that each farmer should forward to Canowindra at his earliest opportunity one bag. of wheat towards this deserving object, and we have been requested to acta,s ' receiving officer.' This honor we gratefully accept, aud having a large buggy-shed at the back of our office at present empty, we are prepared to receive and store each, donation as it comes to hand until such time as a sufficient number of bags are in hand to justify us forwardiug them to Sydney via Cowra. Correspondeuce. fflc do not hold ourselves responsible for views expressed, by oar correspondents —Ed.] ( To the Editor. J Sir, — In replying to the letter re Hunting contests at Shows signed W. T. Moore, advocating the abolishment of large prizes being given for this class of horse. I would ask you to favor me with space in your columns, to point out the errors under which your correspondent is laboring. First — That nothing can be gained from an educa ? fional point of view — In this special in '? stance alone, I contend that he is utterly 'wrong, in so much that did wo not breed this particular class of horse and edu cate eim to jump, we should lose that large demand for this (special class of stock for which the colonies are becoming noted, as evidenced|by the large number recently bought for the Imperial Service in Soutn Africa. That the breeders of hunters do 'not use sufficient care and discretion in the blending and rearing of this kind of horse I fully admit, but ex perienc...

Lines on Henry Kendail. [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 25 May 1900

Lines on fSwrji' Kendall. The following lines on the life of Henry Kendall, from the pen of the poet's Own. mother, which probably very few have read before, should prove of great interest to the mmy lovers of the late departed national baid. They are copied from tiie orignal M.S. of Mrs. Kendall — TO HENB.Y KENDALL. He was born at the foot of the mountain ; He was taught his first letters in sand ; His companions, mimoses and gum trees, And the beautiful birds of the laud. To his, ears the wild scream of the curlew 'Was sweeter than sweetest of flutes, And the silvery tinkling' of bell -birds More soothing' than fair ladies' lutes. The despised aborigines loved him — They partook of his hard crust of bread ; And he followed wherever they led him Without fear of peril or dread. He grew up 'mid struggles to manhood, And then he burst forth into' song That will always be heard in Australia The mountains and gullies among. Tli en came to his heart a great first-love. Which could never ...

In Time Of our Tribulation. [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 25 May 1900

In Time Of oar Tribu lation. Once that calm gave way. It was wlien young Scott received a wound that was meant to injure the older man,, and the Major stepped forward, anxious and troubled. 1 It is nothing,' cried youilg Scott, though his lips were white, and blood poured down Lis arm. Major Harrington led him away, and bandaged the wound, which was more painful than serious. ' Dear lad,' he Raid, ' you should not do so much for me.' Young Scoff caught his hands and burst 211 ro tears. Remember, he was onlv eighteen, and had gone through such sconces as few of us care to think about Moreover, he was wounded ' I only wish I could do more,' he said, because I am e ) sorry. ' For a moment the Major's face worked, and he turned awav. Scott, was afraid he had hurt him, yet his chief's unusual Jdndness afterwards re-assured him, ' He can't stand this long,' remarked Scot one morning early in September 1o a friend.
