As a new venture in the journalistic world, we have " much pleasure," as they say at presentations, farewell banquets, and other convivial socialities, in falling in with the time honored custom of wishing our readers the Compliments of the Season. Christmastide has run in gloomy cycles lately, and froms 1890, or thereabouts, to the present time the carols chanted in praise of the Festival of the Nativity have had a large element of the minor key imported into their strains. INTERESTING LECTURE. A LECTURE was given in the West Melbourne Congregational Church, cor ner of Howard and William.streets, on Monday evening, by Mr. Charles Full wood, entitled "The Three Mighty M's." Mr. C. Wilson presided, and there was an appreciative audience present. The lecturer said the three mighty M's were -Money, Muscle, and Mind. In regard to the first, he spoke of the ancient system of barter before a coinage was invented, and made reference to the cur rency of various nations, including the Chinese, who formerly used golden cubes, also touching on the Jewish shekel, and the buying and selling of plots of ground mentioned in Scripture, as when Abra hlam purchased a plot of ground for his wife's grave. Referring to Muscle, Mr. Fullwood said it was one of the most potent factors in men getting their living, and its development was desirable and beneficial. Schoolrooms, Victoria street, Nor I.h Melbourne, which proved a success far beyond the tuost sanguine -hopes-of -its plromnoters. Thelprograteuut commenced with the overture " Union Jack," by the Carlton Amateur Or chestra (a string band of 10 performers) -Mr. J. Rosenthal, leader; Mr. Will Johnson, conductor; and Miss Dora Rosenthal, pianist. In the absence of the accompanist (Mr. ). Cleary); Miss Fuller and Mr. J. Madden officiated at the piano. The vocal part was opened by Miss K. Doran rendering "Good-bye Mavourneen," in a sweet, sympathetic manner. She pleaded not guilty. Constable Hickey said he arrested the prisoner early on Su?ndayjorning. Sihe was creating a disturbance in Lothian street. Prisoner said she had only taken " sixpennorth of rum. Dr. Lloyd : Well that might make her druank. She was discharged with a caution. OBSCENE LANGUAGE. Catherine Ardle was charged by Constable Kinneburgh with using bad language.
