BUTCHERS' RACES. [Newspaper Article] — The Ballarat Star — 11 January 1865

BUTCHERS* RACES. j Tbe fifth annual Butchers* Race Meeting came off on Tuesday, according to the usual custom since itt inauguration, in the paddock in front of the Turf Hotel, on the Creswick road, and considering that there were but four events, and these of no great importance, the attendance, exclusive of but chers and others in their line, must have been quite up to anticipation. Between three and four hundred persons were present j on the ground during the afternoon, nearly the whole of whom, unless a few who had been at- j tending the sale yards in the early part of the day, were from Ballarat. The prospect of witnessing, if not very fine racing, at least some fun, must have been the main inducement in attending, and it may be said that aa regards the latter element, the meeting waa at any rate quite np to the mark. Tbe races did not commence until shortly after three o'clock, thia hour being adopted in order to accom modate the persons attending the usual cattle sale at the ...

MINING INTELLIGENCE. [Newspaper Article] — The Ballarat Star — 11 January 1865

MINING INTELLIGENCE. Business at the Corner was dull on Tuesday.   There were sales of Band of Hopes at £125. Sales of Ballarat Quartz (Stieglitz) took place at £96, and of Nelsons at £21. The yield of the Band of Hope claim was 199 oz on Monday, and 248 oz on Tuesday. The Extended Company washed out 80 oz on Monday. The Essex Company has again got to work at the face, and on Tnesday washed a machineful of dirt which yielded 50 oz 18dwt. This has been taken from the new run lately discovered, and which the mining manager distinctly asserts to be an entirely distinct gutter from that known as the Essex gutter. Tbe two machines which have been washed from this portion of the claim have yielded 99 oz. The water is running freely from the drives, and the machinery and boilers having been recently over- hauled, are in good working order. The Duke of Cornwall Company, Durham, has opened the rise into washdirt, and gold can be seen as the work proceeds. It is expected that a m...

NEWS AND NOTES. Ia reference to a statement in out mining intelli gence, in Monday's issue, respecting the terms on which certain land on Pitfield Plains ÍB held for mining purposes, Mr Osbaldistone.of Happy Valley, writes as follows:-" In speaking of the mining Ten tores on the Pitfield Plains, in your issue of this morning, you would lead the public to believe that the companies there are paying to Messrs M'Naoght and Boyd a yearly rental of £5 per acre. This is a mistake, s bonos of £5 per acre is given for the right to mine on the land for a period of 25 years.'' Oar reporter seems to have been misled in the mat ter, bot this correction will remove any misappre hension that may have been caused. Mr Cornish also writes to correct the error, but it is not neces sary to give his letter at length. He concludes with these remarks.--" The terms of the leases of the several companies on the Pitfield Plains are not, I believe, any higher than many other companies are paying, both in thi...

ft» Ifaîlotf liât DAILY ISSUE. I THURSDAY, 12TH JANUARY, 1865. ! Ii is not oar custom to be continually vaunt- ! ing the greatness and importance of Ballarat ¡ and the Ballarat district, because "good wine needs no bush." In every element of greatness Ballarat stands next to the capital city of the colony; but this is a fact about which there is no dispute, and therefore there is no neces sity that it should be constantly proclaimed. Nevertheless, occasions will occur on which we must claim for the district a proper recog nition of its importance. Recently we did 60 in the matter of the proposed Easter Volunteer encampment, and while that affair is still unsettled another possessing some features in common with it demands our attention. As oar readers are aware, the annual National Grain Show is to be held this year in Ballarat, and no doubt some have observed that the choice of our town as the site of the show has excited the jealousy and spleen of certain persons who desired that ...
