The Southern Press and Mr S. L. Anderer Murray, M.L.A. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 8 July 1897

The Southern Press and Mr S. L. Anderer Murray, M.L.A. Tlie Brisbane Echo (whose Editor is Mr Minns, once editor of the Csirns Argus) writes ns follows about the Murray slander: Murray, M.L.A., of the Land Com- mission, has brought himself into col- lision with tho people of Cairns by the recent statement made by him " that agriculture in that district is solely in the hands of the Chinese." The state- ment has only a modicum of truth, nnd a very small modicum, too. Neither Murray nor any member of the Com- mission went out of Cairns, and those acquainted with the district know that agricultural settlement only com- mences three or four miles from the town. If Mr Murray's statement is a fair sample of what the report of the Commission will be, then the money spent in collecting evidence has been thrown away, and the report will be valueless. From a report of a gentle- man who visited nvery selection of which Cairns is tho market town und port, and now the property of the Echo, we le...

From Our Point of View. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 8 July 1897

From Our Point of View. "Can »ny good thing THE BULLETIN come out of Nasaieth ?" T , AND .This question asked CHINESE ' nearly nineteen hundred years ago, is to-úay just as pertinently applied to Cairns, if thia town is looked at through the yellow cam smoky spectacles "of the* Sydney BtiLLKTiN. That smartest of all papers in Australia (in spite of ita chronic com- plaint of liver-enlargement) has. picked upon Cairns as the tpyical home of the servile races, and it fires off its stale little joke at regular, intervals, regarding the manner in which a Cairns white mail is' alleged to salute the Chinese residents. Bie origin iii that joke had some founda- tion, in fact, but of course, no one-not even the BULLETIN itself -really believes that the alien races are regarded in this town in other light than which prevails. in, Sydney itself., "The origin of the BUIXRM'K threadbare and out of elbows witticism respecting the method of, white men ' iii" saluting' a ' Chinaman, wak this : An. ...

Considerable uneasiness, /how- ever, was manifested snnrigt, the friends of those on hoard, and it turned ont that quite a little party, had sccom ( panied Captain Innes on the; " Dove ", which was bound to the Bloomfield River to bring down a cargo of sawn timber for Messrs Johnson, Shaw & Co., ChaifcMS Towers. BEES AND HONEY. [To THE EDITOR "POST."] [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 8 July 1897

BEES AND HONEY. [To THE EDITOR "POST."]' - -Sir, -With- reference - to - an - article on" bees in your issue of:30tb' Jude, will you allow me to po'iiit nut some facts to sup- port me in saying that.an industry might be got tip hero by which over 30 tons pf honey might bo exported monthly. (1.) This is about the! best place in the world for bee-keeping, because hills and swamps close together give bloom longer than level country, and because, there is j a tropical vegetation and bloom' all the year round herc. . ir ",. ' ? ' (2.) Bees are packed away and fed for a good part bf the year in cold climates, and yet produce about 180 or 200 lbs. of honey during the brief "honey harvest ; it is evident that they ought to produce maiiy times as'much herb where they can work all the year round, and where the honey harvest is in winter when thu man- grove trees are in bloom.. (3.) From one colony of bees which I transferred from , a box into bar ; frames last Decembär (six'months agu) I have...
