They are known as the Edithville estate, and are situate opposite Fitzroy Dry Dock, adjoining the White Horse - Point Reserve. The position is unrivalled and offers speoial facilities and advantages. PROPERTY SALES. — Johnson's Bush, The South Annandale Estate, commonly known as Johnson's Bush, will be sold by auction this (Saturday) afternoon, on the ground, by Messrs. Hardie and Gormen. It had been hoped that the grater part of this estate would have been ob tained for a park for Petersham, and even now some jportion may be devoted to such purpose. Meantime, however, the choicest parts are to be brought to the hammer. The auctioneers desoribe South Annan dale as likely to. be the ' model' suburb of Sydney; the assertion is wel...

The Park Question. [Newspaper Article] — Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser — 20 September 1884

The Park Question. _ We understand two deputations are to inter view the Colonial Secretary next Friday on the. question of a park. for Petersham, one. to ask thnt portion of the South Annandale Es tate shall be resumed, and the other to urge the claims - of Wentwoi'th paddock as the chosen .locality. It is a pity that those mov ing in this latter matter could not wait until some definite decision had been arrived nt with regard to South Annandale, whioh is un doubtedly the most suitable spot in the whole borough, especially as their ill-advised action may possibly jeopardise the prospect of getting a park at all. No' doiiibt Wentworth paddock would make a suitable park if the other could not be obtained, but' the question will not be helped by such questionable proceeding as are being taken at present. .

Borough Finances. [Newspaper Article] — Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser — 20 September 1884

Boroturh Finances. .. In our advertising columns will be found the half-yearly balance elieet of the borough Council, which shows the total revenue for the six months ending 4th August last to . have been £4503 14s 7d, and the expenditure for the same period £3734 18s 9d. Ordinarily this would mean a balance of £768 15s lOd with which to commence the present half-year' but as the Connoil commenced tho period for which,, the balance is struck - with a' deficiency of £1788 Is 3d it merely proves that they are that -much less in debt, the overdraft being now only £1019 5b 5d, of whioh sum £807 18s lOd is on Town Hall aooount, the debt on the i building having been considerably increased, by the erection of a gallory - and proscenium, whioh together cost £324 lis Od. The passing . through the Legislative Assembly, of tlie Municipal Ways; Im provement Bill has raised' the ire ofj Mr. William Piatt, -wlio has 6een letting off biB surplus steam in a s'eries^of letters . to the Herald and Echo , in which letters he has been by no mecbs careful to adhere to fact. : This is to be regretted, not only for Mr. Pratt's sake, bnt be caase it' has indnced otherei to take np the oadgels, and, basing their argu ment# upon Mr. Pratt's misstatements, to very considerably endeavour to mis lead the public generally bn- the matter. Loitering in the Streets. [Newspaper Article] — Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser — 20 September 1884

Loitering in the .Streets. If the Leichhardt Council should get the by-law approved by the Executive Council for prosecuting persons standing or loitering 'on the footways, or in public places, to the incon venience of passers by or interruption'of traffic, ? they will have done praiseworthy work. They will, no doubt, succeed. The police can act immediately the by-law has been passed. If loitering people do not desist when told to do so by any officer of the Council, or by any police constable, they will on conviction pay a fine not less than 5b. or greater than £f. The Leichhardt Connoil wished that* the fines might be recoverable before any stipendiary magistiate. This clause has been struck out as . unnecessary. Now, in reference tc this loitering, especially on the part of larrikins and Iarrikinesses, whose language and manners are often beastly and disguting, it is in some boroughs an intolerable evil. In Newtown the evil had beceme unbearable, but the Coun cil in that place we...

Gossiping Corner, i , Now that the Balmain aldermen have under their consideration the proposal to purchase the local braneh of the gas- com-1 pany and supply to ratepayers, the lighting element at a - somewhat ro,ore reasonable ratej' the iqformatiOn .which' ;has .been 're- ceived: by the' Municipal Association will be perused with interest -by your readers. From the circular I learn that several cerporations in- the ; United Kingdom possess their own. gas-works. The Dundee Corporation purchased the gas-works from a private company in 1868, and have re duced the price for gas, from '5s. 4d.'(a^. eharged by the company) to 8s. Gd. per 1000ft. They charge 3s. -4d. per 1000 for street lighting and 8s. !6d. per lamp for attendance and repairs; under the com pany the charge was 4s. 5d. per 1000.
