THE TOURNAMENT. [Newspaper Article] — South Coast Times and Wollongong Argus — 15 January 1915

' « . . . I THE TOItt©NAMEiNT,. I r The largest crowd yet ; was that which assembled at the 'Star last Saturday night to witness the first draw' of the second: round of the £30' -Tournament, and a very good night's programme it proved. The first bout proved the surprise of ths tourney; it was between 'Screw ' Robjnson (Coledale), and iack SmiitH -Wollongdjag)i in the 9.9 division. Robinson, by his V previous perform ' ' ' ances was -'looked upon as easily the ! ' winner of this division, but ? the * methods adopted by Smith altered this -opinion, for, after evening with t'l Robinson tor ,the flrst iour rounds, „ he eent over a punch an' the fifth' which almost fettled Robinson, the -latter taking nine; he pulled himsdlf ' 'together again, however, and _ saw the last round out. The judges then , s * ? disagreed 'as to the twinner,' 'but Wol |y Kirwas had the third say, and lie rightly pointed to Smith as the winner, Lou Wagley (Wollongong), ^nd Toa, Cook {Fort Kembla), were the „ nex...

SPORT. BOXING. DARCY v. RUDD. [Newspaper Article] — South Coast Times and Wollongong Argus — 15 January 1915

SPORT. BOXING. DAR'CY v. RIU'DD. Judging by the large crowd whicn assembled at the - local stadium on Wednesday night to : witness J acte Darcy go through his training exer cises, the contest to-morrow night between he and Bill Rudd should null n verv larce sate. DarCy bOX . ' , ed with lArtie Powell (the lightweight who recently outpointed Yates, but didn't get the award), and showed real cleverness, for such a big man. He is very powerfully set up and it is doubtful if ever a man entered a ring in such condition as he is at. present, practically every muscle in his body has been developed by very strenuous training, and he realty looks the 'goods' to give Rudd a rough, passage. Of course, Sid. Neil sen troubled Rudd to a. certain ex tent in their recent contest ; b'-t Neilsen lacked condition, a feature that shouldn't deter Darcy ; tomor row night- In addition to this 'das ^ - sy' bout, Ben Doyle, the heavy weight who is just at present c gus- ing a great deal of city, newspaper c...
