SPECIAL SURVEYS. [Newspaper Article] — Geelong Advertiser — 16 January 1841

SPECIAL SUI?VEYS. We refer to the fourth pigoef6r a very important document emanating roam , the t iAnd and: Emigration hoard, declaratQry of the mnanner of procedure and routine of business under tlie uie Iegulations, leaving minor details, of'course, to the locial authorities. The Patriot is tie onlyv paper which. has 'gt this piece of news: it'is not even likely thait the Governor himseolf has received notice ot it.- The Patriot appears to increase daily in weight and authority, without which the;.most plaasible writers are usel-as if not dangerous. The Special Survey sy.tem, hitherto peculiar to South Australia, is now to be inc.orporated .with . our Land Regnlations.. DISMEMBERMENT OF THE COLONY. [Newspaper Article] — Geelong Advertiser — 16 January 1841

DISMEMBRRM ENT OF THE COLONY. The Melbourne Press has und.r gone a strange revulstpn of feeling lately. But yesterday, 'twas' brim ful of wrath ' To-day It sheds tears over its fallen foe. The Ginzetto is particularly chop-fallen, and cvetn the Patriot bestows ' the passing tribute cff.a sigh.' The excessive commiseration of tile Gazette re minds us of the tale, that travellers often shed tears when they hear the cries of crocodiles or hyaenas. which are so like those of a human being in distress, that the~ unwary: are. often tempted out .of tile road which they ought to pursue. Now we are so haud-hearted as to laugh at this folly.. If there be any weight in their present arguments, we ought inminediuaoly to petition for the restoration. of the ancien .regine. Or is it only' meant that Twofold iBay; 1%Ianero, and the banks of the Iurrtiumibidges; should -be- delivered up to the martjrdom from -which we haive just esespel ourselves ? But perhaps it would?,be a fairer in fireicee to s...

MELBOURNE. [Newspaper Article] — Geelong Advertiser — 16 January 1841

IROM OUR OWN CORRgtSPONDENTS No farther intelligence has been received -from the wreck of the urn fortunate Cloomel. The vessels wh;ch sailed to bring up the passengers `are hourly expected. The Rfl tia, as you tnay guess, has engrossed the attention of the inhabit ants of this gay province. The h',rse-, the gigs, the phaetons, aud the carriages crowded the shore, while every variety of aquaticconveyance itudded the bay. The scene was enliveoing anti gratily ing even to the casaal observer ; wnst then must have been the ideas.of those who had seen the same espanse a few years: before, when it was a dreary vrod-when all was 'motionless save'the ripple of the wave. -and all was si:enmt save the accasional screech of a startled bird. POST OFFICE REGULATIONS. [Newspaper Article] — Geelong Advertiser — 16 January 1841

Proa OrrFZs ReOULATroN .-There has been much ado about nothing in manufacturing the mighty details of the. late changes, -but we cannot see that any real benefit has resulted therefrom. There has been a jumb ling and changing of items, whilst the suin total remains unaltered. The alteration of the days has effected no saving of time. The Sydney Mail reaches Melbourne olne on Tuesday night, and leaves early on Wednes day morning, so that no one can send answers , by return of Post. .The Mail arrives here on Thursday ..after noon, and is despatched on Saturday morning. The oniy, real alteration, is,;that a Lag is made up in .Geelong. for Sydney direct, so that it will now be necessary' for parties sending for eign and other ship letters to specify whether they are rrq ?irod to be for warded via Ale!bourne, or via ',jyduey;. SauMEx.-The want of an eflice tt Water Police at William's tqwn' has been severely felt. From:n .one ship (the Salselte) the crew deserted to a man. The erimping s...

From what we can learn, it seems that the steamer having gone a.shore duiing a spring title, is now embedded in the sand at some considerable distance from the. outer edge of the rand spit at low water mark; she is consiquently compara tivelv arfe.from the waves. Her hull is sunkrt in the send so that thlere is ten feet water in the hold, the cargo, it least so muchl of it as would damage from salt water, is consequently des troyed. As she swingt at hiigh water, and had not when the -taset left sus tSined any very material injury, san guine hopes are entertained that she will ultimately be got oft. We confess however, that there is but a remote poesibility that a ccnsummation so devoutly to be wished will ever be effected. MISCELLANEA. THE FARMERS DAUGHTER. [Newspaper Article] — Geelong Advertiser — 23 January 1841

3195 CE ZL.ANEA. THE FAIRMERS DAUGHTER. There's a.r world of buxom beauty flourislhing in the slhales of the coun try. Farm-houses are dangerous places. Asayou are thinkina only of .heei,, or of curds, you may he sutlidely shot through by a pair of hright eyes, and melted away in a bewitching smile that you never dreamt of till the muischief was done. In towns, and theatres, and thronged assemblies of the rich and the titled fair, you are on your guard; you know what yon are exposed to and put on your breast plates, anad pass Ithrough the most deadly onslaught of beauty-safe and sound. But in those sylvan retreats, dreaming ol nighting aeles, and hearing only the lowing of oxen, you are taken by sus prise. Outsteps a flair creature, croses. a glade, hleaps a style; you start, and stand.-lost in wonder and astonished admiration; you fake out your tablets to write a sonnet on the returniol the nymphs and dryads to earrlt when up comes John Tomkins, and say , *Ita' only the Farmer's Ja...

VAN DZE1DEEN'S LAND. Tuu DrsawrnY.- is generally believed that. this coi. ,?rnt, which usua!ly appears at t:a se-ason of the 'tear, arises from t~'?"s in eating fruit; we are bawever of a diffurent opinion, tiand are rather inclined to nattribute the disease to the impure sluate oJ the water during the hot dry -weather, although probably in somue cases fruit may have a pernicious efli cacy.-?lobart Town Advertiser. pOTAroars.--Owing to the drynese of the a'aoen the potatoes in general ha ve turned out an indfferent crop. TO THE RIGHT HONORABLE LORD JOHN RUSSELL. [Newspaper Article] — Geelong Advertiser — 23 January 1841

TO THIE fIGHT HONOIRABLE LORD JOHN RIUSSEI.L. Mlr :LoRD--I approach the subject of White or Convict Slavery, with diftidnce: the weight of evil it en. tails miht well bear down a more practised pen. I will merely aIny before you a few of its evils, in order to show the propriety of avertint from this self-supportingcummunity the pe.tiferous contagion inseparable from a continuance of this vile sys tem. A residence in these colonies of upwards of thirt(y-seven years has put me in possession of sufficient data to assert (and to prove, it necessnary.) that, wherever convict servau ts are domesticated, the moral character of the risiong generation is in general more or less tainted ; and It is not the male portion of the rising race who sufler me at deeply : many sad and deplorabl!e casses have come :..unoder my own knowledge,-irnaddi lion to the numbers proclaimedhby courts of juslice, in which the parent's hajipiness lnd their dalughlters' purity of mind, have irretrievably sunk befor...
