Illness of the Hon. John Smith. Thb friends, and they are legion, of the above gentleman will regret to hear that he .is confined to his bed through illness. A few weeks ago be came to Molong, and pro ceeded to Gamboola on his annual visit. There he took suddenly ill last Thursday week, and the services of Dr. Harold Browne were secured. On Sunday morning, how ever, tbe lion, gentleman 8 condition was considered very ciitical, and Dr. Codrington, of Orange, was summoned. A consultation, we are iuformed, was held between tbe two medical gentlemen, but with what re sult we are not in a position to Bay. Towards Sunday evening there was an improvement in the patient's condition, but it has re mained just about the same throughout the week. According to the hon. gentleman's wish, Mrs. T. Barton, who is Mr. Smith's favourite daughter, was Bent for during the week, and this lady is now at Gamboola nursing her father. Nothing is being left undone that it is thought would be likely to restor...

THE ELECTORAL DIFFICULTY. Sydney, Friday. — In the Assembly last eveuiug, Mr. G. H. Reid moved the adjourn ment of the House in reference to the action of the Go-ernment repealing the old electoral law before the provisions for the working of the new Act were complete. He urged the Ministiv to consent to the introduction of a short Bill to provide for any contingency that tni-;ht arise, The Hon. Edmund Barton replied, arguing that the Government had no option but to adopt the course it did ; but should a Jby election become necessary, a short Act could be passed making the requisite provisions.
