CHANGING CONDITIONS. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 17 April 1896

CHANGING CONDITIONS. There's a book been recently issued from the Government Printing Office, ' by authority,' which is called 'New South Wales, the Mother Colony of the Austra lias.' In a brief introduction the editor says, 'We are on the eve, rather at the starting point, of a totally new de parture in our political and com mercial, and, therefore, it may be hoped, in our industrial and social, career, and in order that due note may be possible hereafter of our progress or otherwise it Jbehoves us to know exactly to-day in all these respects where we start from.' If there is any trade in the country that needs to take stock of its present position and its future prospects it is our own. Everything is changing about us, yet some of us are clinging, like giim death to a dead soldier, to the dear old gods our fathers bowed down to It won't work. We need not shut our eyes to hard facts. Listen ! The spread of country chilling works means a change in our present Glebe Island methods. T...

Rinderpest at the Cape. TO THE EDITOR "S.S. AND S. JOURNAL." [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 17 April 1896

Rinderpest at the Cape. TO THE EDITOR ' S.S. AND S. JOURNAL.' Sir, — I do not know if you noticed three separate cablegrams about rinderpest in Africa. This word is chiefly applied to a deadly Russian cattle disease. It is also used in Africa as the name of a cattle disease which closely resembles the Russian. Now, I want to put stock-holders on their guard, for if either the Russian or African finds a free hand here good-bye to the cattle sta tions for at least five years. There is n- t a single holder who could possibly escape ruin, and, heaven knows, that would be worse than any kind of war. Well, there is no doubt but this disease is in Africa in some form or another. The present Matabele War is said to have com menced over this, and I don't wonder at it. You remember when rinder pest visited England and com pletely ruined two-thirds of the cattle-owners, and cost the Go vernment to exterminate it over three millions in gold. Well, will any action be taken, or will we simply hop...

Question Box DISEASED CATTLE. TO THE EDITOR "S. S. AND S. JOURNAL." [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 17 April 1896

Question Box DISEASED CATTLE. TO THE EDITOR ' S. S. AND S. JOURNAL.' Sir, — In the March number of the circular issued by Messrs. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., appears a notice to stockowners directing them how to acb in connection with the new regu lations under which stock cattle may be introduced into New South Wales from Queensland ; and it is also stated ' that instructions have been given to the border inspectors of stock to pass all lumpy and cancered cattle on the drover making an affidavit that such cattle will not be offered for sale or used for human food. The owners will, therefore, be able to make all that is possablo under the circum stances.' In the face of this I was not a little surprised on reading your paper last week to find that a Mr. Bowman had been prosecuted at Dubbo for selling lumpy cattle, although, accord ing to the evidence, it appeared quite plain the cattle were not intended for human consumption. In fact, the stock were found in a yard connected with a boili...

Trial at Forbes. TO THE EDITOR "S S. AND S. JOURNAL." [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 17 April 1896

Trial at Forbes. TO THE EDITOR ' S S. AND S. JOURNAL.' Sir, — Referring to your article in a recent issue headed, ' Important case for Agents,' and commenting on the case lately tried in Forbes, ' Denn ing v. Newell Brothers,' we desire to point out :— (1) We never authorised Tindale and Coles to sign any con tract for us, this is shown by the fact that they only sent us out for our signature a form of contract with £1 deposit which we refused to sign or accept. (2) You omit to point out that Denning had prior to the 10th February positively refused to give the 2s 6d, and told Tindale and Coles to decline the offer, and tliey had tvritten us to that effect before they prepared and sent out to us the con tract for signature by us and the £1. (3) That on the 8th February we told Denning that if rain fell our offer was to be treated as withdrawn that no rain had fallen when Denning directed Tindale and Coles to decline to buy at 2s 6d, and that heavy rain falling on Saturday night (9th...

Grain, &c. Hill, Clark & Co. report [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 17 April 1896

Grain, &c. Hill, Clark & Co. report wheat. — There is still no movement in local milling grain, millers as yet confining their purchases to the Californian and New Zealand cereal. Chick wheat is selling at 3s 6d to 3s 9d, screenings 3s to 3s 2d per bushel. Maize. — Heavier supplies have been avail able during the week, and, as a conse quence, the market has weakened to-day ; prime quality is being freely quitted at 2a Id per bushel, off sorts in proportion. Oats. — A fairly good demand exists for this line ; previous quotations still hold good. They arc taken rather more freely ; heavy feed Is lid to 2s, seed 2s 3d to 2s 4d per bushel. Chaff. — Shorter shipments from inter colonial ports, and lighter arrivals from local centres have caused a sharp advance in this feed. Prime green Adelaide is selling to £5, Victorian £4 10s to £4 15s per ton ; primest local £4 10s to £5 per cwt. Hay. — This line has also advanced sharply during the week, closing value of primest oate...

Hordern Brothers. CHEAP CLOTHES. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 17 April 1896

Hordern Brothers. CHEAP CLOTHES. There's a big shop in Pitt-street, Sydney, where they are booming Freetrade. They build suits of clothes for 45s that they used to charge 55s for when the duties were paid. They make 'em of serge, sergerette, tweeds, and suitings. Quality undoubted. Fancy getting a suit made to measure from a large selection for 45s. They make a dress-suit for four guineas and upwards. It looks as if we were going to get our clothes cheap on account of the tariff so if we can cover our anger with decent clothes we won't be so badly off. If we have 45s left after paying our taxes we can look re epectable ; if not, we can look the other thing. Country residents wishing to share in the reduced prices can obtain full par ticulars, patterns, self-measure forma, and tape, by sending a postcard, addressed Hordern Brothers, Pitt-street (only), Sydney. To promote a feeling of interest in colonial industry a business suit is made no order, of N.S.W. tweeds, for the modest sum ...
