The programme of the Labor Socialists, as disclosed by the opening speech of Parliament, is remarkable for its want of those hundred and one reforms Labor agitated so vigorously for when it occu pied opposition, and remarkable also for its evidence of inability to abide by its own platform. It was, at first, repeat edly asserted by Labor that their policy was a lion-borrowing one, then it devel oped to oue of only sufficient loan ''money' to carry out works that would pay in terest aud oue per cent, sinking 'fund.' Now they have so far departed from their platform that they are proving the greatest spenders the State has had ex perience of, and apparently the case of paying interest and oue per cent, has also assumed an easy phase in their minds, By the end of the year the Government will have spent, if they carry out their intentions, somewhere about 20 millions, comprised of revenue and loan money. Now the trouble is that money is not. so. cheap as it was 12 months ago, and only, ...

Correspondence. (To The Editor.) [Newspaper Article] — Raymond Terrace Examiner and Lower Hunter and Port Stephens Advertiser — 2 August 1912

Correspondence. .(To tho Editor.) . Sir,— There is just now goitiK. rounds of the city and country press the same, or similar, articles on child slavery and toil on dairy farms, in which in stances are given of pathetic cases telling ' the bitter tale of child slavery.' Now we all know there are cat.cs of ilhtreiit inent of children iu uiany'vvalks of life, and dairying no doubt has its share, d)Ut it if. .significant that these pubucatious and these pathetic cases have had their advent in tlie press more particularly and more frequently since the formation of the Rural Workers' Union. It has ftir tlier significance when we read in the R.VV.U. the following : ' No child uiicjer the age of 15 years shall be employed in the dairying or fruit growing industry.' Of course it may be just a coincidence, but when we see columns of this sort contributed iu the ' Worker ' it is like bringing grist to a mill, and it is hard, to believe the purpose is simply to expose .a grave wrong. The objec...
