OUR MASONIC PAGE. DUTIES OF COMMITTEES OF INQUIRY. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 27 August 1897

OUR MASONIC PAGE. DUTIES OF COMMITTEES OF INQUIRY. The place of greatest peril to Freemasonry is the outer door of a lodge. It is especially appropriate that the Tyler, with a drawn sword, should be stationed there. But it is not only cowans that should be kept at a distance, but also unworthy applicants for initiation into the mystery of Freemasonry. The Tyler alone, cannot accomplish this work. The Committee of Inquiry on the petition of an applicant for initiation is, in this regard, the Tyler of the Lodge. This committee examines into the qualification of the applicant, and primarily decides whether he is worthy to be balloted for by the lodge. This committee is the greatest barrier set up against the advance of the unworthy into the Fraternity. If it be passed successfully, more than half the contest is over. Hence the importance of such committees always conscientiously and thoroughly perform ing their duties. If the time should ever come when this duty shall be generally exec...
